This year's theme is The Many Dimensions of Gratitude. This is a wonderful opportunity to get away from "busy-ness" for 24 hours. We will alternate periods of silence with times to talk.

Cedar Cross offers walking trails, an outdoor labyrinth, and a comfy lodge. Cost for overnight lodging and 3 meals is $85.  Submit a check payable to CPC, with retreat designation, to Barbara Carew.  Please email Jeanne Bolick (jlbolick@att.net) to reserve a spot or ask questions.

Guatemala Mission News
Our travelers have returned after a Spirit-filled week of service, learning,
and relationship building. We accomplished a lot and will let you know more through a special message to be sent out next week. Thank you for your prayers and your support for this ministry.

Scholarships: We now have three new sponsors for a class of five incoming students from Nimasac, Guatemala. To sponsor a student, please contact Ellen Govert, Colleen Hann, Kevin Steidinger, or Medora Hix. The cost is $275 per year for a local school student in either middle or high school (depending upon who enrolls and which school they go to), or $900 per year for a student attending school in Quetzaltenango (again, depending upon enrollment). This latter amount may be shared with one or two other couples or individuals. This is a three-year commitment. Other requests include writing to your student mid-year (July) and especially at the conclusion of the year (October), and sending down a small gift in October.

New students will be brought in to the program this month. There are four girls, and one young man who is a mature student, going back for a high school education. Three of the five wish to go to school in Quetzaltenango, including this mature student. We'll have pictures and information about them ready to share with the new sponsors shortly.

Support Dorcas Ministries by bidding on a quilt!

The Quilt Fundraiser is part of Dorcas Ministries 50th Anniversary celebration. This year we had a celebration theme of STITCHING TOGETHER A COMMUNITY - 50 Years of Service. Dorcas is named after a woman from the Bible who made garments for the poor and became notable for her charitable work. (Acts 9:36-42).  Today, Dorcas Ministries provides crisis relief to western Wake County residents who seek stability and self-sufficiency through food and financial aid, scholarships, training programs, referrals, and an affordable thrift shop.

Over the past year, we have collected over 50 beautiful quilts (and a dog!) that were donated by talented quilters.

Come see the quilts in person! Remaining howings will be:
  • October 29th: 5 PM - 8 PM
  • October 30th: 11 AM - 2 PM
All showings will take place at 171 High House Road, the end unit at Dorcas Plaza.  If you are not available for one of the showings but would like to see the quilts in person, contact Ellen at ellen@dorcascary.org to make arrangements.

Quilts can also be viewed and bid on online.  To view the quilts and access the online bidding, click HERE. Bids are accepted now through November 5 at 12 PM.

Thank you for your continued support of Dorcas Ministries!

Cool Books Club
The Cool Books Club will meet on Tuesday, November 6th, (Election Day) at 7 p.m. at Peg Giesbrecht's house.  Our book for this month is Everybody, Always: Becoming Love in a World Full of Setbacks and Difficult People by Bob Goff.  This book is a New York Times best seller.

A review on Amazon reads:
In his entertaining and inspiring follow-up to the New York Times bestselling phenomenon Love Does, Bob Goff takes readers on a journey into the secret of living without fear, constraint, or worry. The path toward the liberated existence we all long for is found in a truth as simple to say as it is hard to do: love people, even the difficult ones, without distinction and without limits.
Driven by Bob's trademark storytelling, Everybody, Always reveals the lessons Bob learned--often the hard way--about what it means to love without inhibition, insecurity, or restriction. From finding the right friends to discovering the upside of failure, Everybody, Always points the way to embodying love by doing the unexpected, the intimidating, the seemingly impossible. Whether losing his shoes while skydiving solo or befriending a Ugandan witch doctor, Bob steps into life with a no-limits embrace of others that is as infectious as it is extraordinarily ordinary. 'Everybody, Always' reveals how we can do the same.

Please contact Peg Giesbrecht at 919-859-3951 or Ellen Cline at 919-469-1456 if you would like to join us.

Triple F Group News
Our next Triple F Group get-together will be a trip. Meet behind CPC on Wednesday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m. to carpool to S & T's Soda Shop in Pittsboro for lunch and ice cream, then on to Southern Seasons in Bear Creek for a tour and Christmas shopping. Come join us!

Thanks to Elina and Katie (Amy Bardi's Mom) for giving us an update on the Clothed in Hope program on October 15. The program brings families out of poverty through a sewing program in Zambia. Elina is the hard-working Program Director in Zambia. She has been involved in the program from day one.

Alternative Gift Market is coming:
Save the Date, November 18!

An alternative gift is a nontraditional way of giving. It's a meaningful gift that will help someone in need. Rather than buying a traditional gift for a loved one, shoppers at Alternative Gift Markets can honor their friends and family by donating to various national and international humanitarian projects. We also include tangible gifts that directly support people in need. You can buy handcrafts and coffee and chocolate, to name only a few.

Our Alternative Gift Market supports local ministries such as the Carying Place, Esperanza de Guatemala, Read and Feed and more-ministries right here in Wake County and all over the world. Our AGM will include about 15 booths.

The Market opens at 9:45 a.m. during Sunday School and will conclude at
2:00 p.m. Classes of students of all ages are encouraged to visit and even serve. A light lunch will also be available for a nominal cost.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Encourage everyone you know to give a gift this season of a better life for those who truly need it.

Five Years of Fair Trade at CPC!

As the Fair Trade Project begins its sixth year, here is a quick overview of the first five years.

The CPC Fair Trade Project
  • was started with a CPC Memorial and Endowment grant.
  • has purchased over $15,000 in products from Equal Exchange, the Presbyterian Coffee Project's supplier.
  • has averaged nearly $4,000 in gross sales per year.
  • has given $3500 to Esperanza, the CPC mission in Guatemala.
  • has given more than $200 in coffee and other products to CPC.
Thank you, again, for your support.   Please visit the Fair Trade table at the Alternative Gift Market on November 18.

SAVE THE DATE: CPC Fall Blood Drive
Wednesday, December 5

IMPORTANT! If you plan to participate in the blood drive,
you may not have
donated blood elsewhere after October 10.

The fall blood drive is coming up Wednesday, December 5, 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We will be working with The Blood Connection , a blood services provider used by most Triangle hospitals.

In addition to fully staffing the drive, Blood Connections also offers the "Faith in Action" program, where the church receives a check reflecting $10 per successful donation. Given our previous average of successful donations, this will be $350 - $500. CPC is designating these funds to our Health and Wholeness Ministry.

Watch the upcoming newsletters and bulletins for more information on the December 5 CPC Blood Drive! Thanks for your continued support of this critical ministry at CPC!

Security News Update
Where are the keypads? Apparently, they are still being made and cannot be shipped to Cary until mid-November. Please stay tuned.

CPC Online Picture Directory News Update

The first phase of the new CPC Online Picture Directory is in progress.

A few weeks ago, families listed in our new Servant Keeper data base received an early invitation to access and edit their directory information.  The link in this previous invitation has expired, and a new email with the access procedure and more information will be sent this week.  (Sending last week was delayed due to a needed database fix.)

This new online directory will allow all families to edit their contact information
and upload their own photos. Watch your email for this important message!

Visit the new CPC website
Our new website is live at  carypresbyterian.org! The website still includes access to the church calendar, worship bulletins and issues of the e-Link, and features more photos of CPC activities and a responsive design that works easily on your phone or tablet. The team will continue to tweak the site and welcomes your feedback. Team members are Melinda Crouse, Julie Henry, Barbara Harvey, Dee Hatch, Terry Anderson, Phil Melton, and Lori Pistor. Special thanks to long-time webmaster Jason Derifaj for his technical expertise and guidance.

CPC Church Service Podcasts
CPC Service podcasts are added weekly to Soundcloud and for posting to the website on this page. They appear with the most recent service featured at the top of the page, with the illustration from that week's bulletin as an identifier (as shown above).

(The services for August 12 and for September 2 are not available due to recording difficulties those Sundays. You can find a copy of Mitzi's message 'Expectation Vs. Reality' for August 12 at this link.)

The public CPC Facebook page is a great continuing source of information about what is upcoming and what has happened at CPC. Visit it frequently for news and pictures you won't see elsewhere, and share the posts with your friends and on your own Facebook page!
