Dear Families,

Saints and All Hallows Eve
Saints and All Hallows Eve
Please note that there is NO CLASS TOMORROW on October 31. Happy trick or treating to all.

Remember that All Hallows Eve is followed by All Saints Day, a holy day of obligation.  See the schedules for the masses for that feast and All Souls below.

You can watch the video at the right with your kids to find out more about the saints.

babybottleDid you forget to bring back your baby bottle?  We'll still take it!  Bring it to class on November 7.

Fr. Kyle Sladek was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Green Bay last June.  Prior to that, he taught in our Religious Education program as part of his pastoral preparation.

He will be celebrating a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, November 4 at 9:30 AM at St. Emily, with a reception to follow.  Please join us!

St. Emily has begun a Queen of Hearts Raffle.  The raffle pot builds until the Queen of Hearts is drawn. Drawings are held weekly.  Come to the St. Emily office to buy tickets. It's a fun and exciting way to support the parish.

We would like to invite you to a Back-to-School night in Religious Ed on November 14.  We will have 20 minute periods for you to observe what happens in your child's classroom (and enough time to circulate if you have more than one child.)  We hope that you can join us and discover a bit more about what the kids are learning. Save the date!

Save the date as well for a special mass here at St. Emily in the Syro-Malabar Rite, which comes from India.  Fr. Kevin Mundackal will be here to celebrate this mass at 3:00 PM on November 18.

One more date to save - Breakfast with Santa will be December 15 at St. Emily with two sittings at 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM. More details to come.

coatsCoat Drive
November 17 and 18

The temperature is dropping, please check your closets. Do you have coats that are just hanging there? Can you share your warmth?

St. Emily Women's Club is having their annual coat drive after the Saturday evening Mass on November 17, and after all the morning Masses on Sunday, November 18.

We will be collecting clean winter coats and jackets, as well as new gloves, mittens, scarves for men, women and children. Donations can be dropped off in the gathering area of the church next to Hajdu Hall.
Your donations will go directly to the homeless and those in need in the Chicago area.

Items will be given to:
  • Button and Zippers, an organization that distributes coats and jackets to homeless shelters, youth organizations and individuals living on the streets of Chicago;
  • Catholic Charities. Coats will be distributed at the Des Plaines location for the homeless in our own area;
  • Sarah's Circle, located in Chicago's Uptown Community which serves women and their children who are homeless or in need of a safe place to stay.
If you have any questions, please call Marybeth Janak at 224 217-541 or Mary McKeown at 847 770-0704.

Thanks for sharing your warmth!

Living the Beatitudes
The saints are our companions

More in our exploration of Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation,  Gaudete et Exsultate .  In honor of All Saints Day, a few notes about how the saints join with us in faith.

The Letter to the Hebrews presents a number of testimonies that encourage us to "run with perseverance the race that is set before us" (12:1). It speaks of Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Gideon and others (cf. 11:1-12:3). Above all, it invites us to realize that "a great cloud of witnesses" (12:1) impels us to advance constantly towards the goal. These witnesses may include our own mothers, grandmothers or other loved ones (cf. 2 Tim 1:5). Their lives may not always have been perfect, yet even amid their faults and failings they kept moving forward and proved pleasing to the Lord.

The saints now in God's presence preserve their bonds of love and communion with us. The Book of Revelation attests to this when it speaks of the intercession of the martyrs: "I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain for the word of God and for the witness they had borne; they cried out with a loud voice, 'O sovereign Lord, holy and true, how long will it be before you judge?'" (6:9-10). Each of us can say: "Surrounded, led and guided by the friends of God... I do not have to carry alone what, in truth, I could never carry alone. All the saints of God are there to protect me, to sustain me and to carry me". (No. 3, 4)
