Character Trait for November: Self-Discipline
Self-Discipline is defined as
positive self control of ones words, actions, impulses and desires, demonstrating good judgment or courage to do the right thing.
Ideas for Parents
-Identify strategies for practicing self-discipline when in heated situations, such as count to 10 and back, stopping to breathe deeply several times, going for a walk, thinking about the consequences, and trying to identify what the other person is feeling.
-Discuss the benefits of going to school for 12 or more years. Does it take patience to come to school day after day/ What are the rewards of getting an education?
Bullying: What it is and what it's not
What Bullying IS:
The definition of bullying: "A person is bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons, and he or she has difficulty defending himself or herself".
This definition includes three important components:
1. Bullying is aggressive behavior that involves unwanted, negative actions
2. Bullying involves a pattern of behavior repeated over time
3. Bullying involves an imbalance of power or strength
What Bullying IS NOT:
1. Not liking someone
2. Being excluded
3. Accidentally bumping into someone
4. Making other kids play or do things a certain way
5. A single act of telling a joke about someone
6. Arguments/Conflict
7. Expressions of unpleasant thoughts or feelings regarding others
8. Isolated acts of harassment, aggressive behavior, intimidation or meanness
We encourage parents to talk with their scholars about these situations and reach out for help when there is a concern. Our scholars understand what these behaviors look like and are encouraged to look out for each other.
