Northwestern Hosts MEM Programs Consortium Meeting 
School representatives discuss strategies to enhance MEM degree 
  
On October 18 and 19 representatives from all 9 schools that form the Master of Engineering Management Programs Consortium (MEMPC) met at Northwestern University to share best practices and enhance the MEM program within industry.  The attending schools included Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Northwestern, Purdue, Tufts, and USC. 
 
Discussions included admissions best practices, methods to build MEM brand awareness within industry, alumni engagement, and ways to bring the student community together through competitions and conferences. The next meeting is scheduled to be held at MIT in Spring 2019.   In order to help advance the MEMPC's goals, the organization also recently hired an Executive Director, Rutu Manchiganti, to manage operations and strategy for the consortium on a day to day basis. 
Northwestern Engineering Launches New Deep Learning Laboratory  (DLL) 
The lab aims to partner with corporations and startups to address challenges of artificial intelligence  

 
 
As artificial intelligence grows in prominence, Northwestern Engineering is launching a  Deep Learning Lab (DLL), which will build a community of deep learning-focused data scientists to service the research and industry needs of the Midwest.
   
Led by faculty in Computer Science and Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences, including MEM Director Mark Werwath, the interdisciplinary lab will produce academic research and technological solutions in collaboration with corporate partners, ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to startups. In addition, MEM alum, Iqbal Arshad, is an industry advisor for the joint project.

Full-Time MEM Students Share Internship Experiences
Students apply their newly-formed business acumen over the summer

 
During their graduate studies MEM full-time students have the option for a summer internship, and several of them took advantage of the opportunity this past year.  Current full-time MEM students Akshay Jain, Sivarama Raman, and Tulsi Ramanujam shared their experiences and how they applied their MEM knowledge.  While Akshay and Sivarama interned with companies in the US, Tulsi traveled to Germany for the summer!
  • Akshay worked as a Product Management Intern at John Crane Inc. in Chicago, IL.  Read more about his internship.
  • Sivarama worked as a Product Management Intern at Generac Power Systems in Waukesha, WI.  Read more about his internship.
  • Tulsi worked as a Strategy and Business Development Intern at Eberspaecher Climate Control Systems in Esslingen, Germany.  Read more about her internship.

Now that the recruiting season is in full-swing, MEM is releasing the  2018 Student Resume Book  to facilitate the recruiting process. Dheeraj Kapur, originally from Mumbai, India, is a full-time MEM student. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Mumbai, India and a Master's degree in Energy Systems Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India. He worked for five years in the automotive industry on Hybrid and Electric vehicles before starting at the MEM program. His hobbies include photography and reading. His secret talents include creating (painfully awful) puns and forming (frustratingly terrible) word-play. Antonio Zarza Mayorga
 Sr. Product Manager, Sony Pictures Entertainment
Antonio Zarza Mayorga, originally from Mexico City, is a 2012 graduate of the Northwestern MEM program. He studied Chemical Engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and Industrial Engineering with a specialization in Supply Chain Management at the Panamerican University in Mexico. He's currently based in Los Angeles, California and works as Sr. Product Manager at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Antonio enjoys spending his spare time by the beach! He is very outgoing, easy to strike a conversation with, and very social.
