Come and sample the delicious food, wine, and beer of the Nipomo region during this year's Taste of Nipomo event at the newly-opened DANA Visitor Center! Featuring live music by Akusae, a silent auction, tours of the new Cultural Center and a cozy bonfire with port and cigars and s'mores, this event is one you don't want to miss!
All funds made will go towards developing the exhibits and educational programs at the DANA Adobe Cultural Center. Tickets are $35 per person and $60 per couple. Space is limited; advance reservations strongly suggested.

Living History Flying Day: The Great War
Open to the public, Planes of Fame Air Museum (Chino, CA) presents its monthly Living History Flying Day on November 3, 2018, featuring "The Great War." A speaker panel of distinguished aviation experts, historians and veterans is featured, followed by a question & answer period and flight demonstration when possible. The WWI aircraft will be on display and perform a flight demonstration (subject to change). At 12:00 noon, the flight demonstration will happen, weather permitting.

at Four Locations in Santa Paula on Sunday, November 4, 2018
Families and Visitors of All Ages Are Invited to Join this Free Community-Wide Celebration
Come and celebrate Día de los Muertos in Santa Paula on Sunday, November 4, 2018! Participating sites will include the California Oil Museum, the Museum of Ventura County’s Agriculture Museum, Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, and the Santa Paula Art Museum. This free, family-friendly event will include traditional craft making activities, music, Aztec and Folklórico dancers, face painting, storytelling, and altar installations. Día de los Muertos attire is encouraged! Visitors can begin at any of the participating locations and proceed to the rest. Pick up a Día de los Muertos passport and collect a stamp at each of the locations to be entered into a free raffle drawing. The three museums are within walking distance of each other, and Santa Paula Cemetery is located just 1.2 miles from the museums. Free parking will be available at the California Oil Museum, Pierce Brothers Santa Paula Cemetery, and the Santa Paula Art Museum. Hours and activities vary by location.

Evolution of the Los Angeles Skyline
Little Landers Historical Society announces the next in its series of monthly 2nd Saturday historical educational programs. November’s program will explain the elements and major events that influenced the development of the LA Skyline since 1900. Why do older LA skyscrapers have flat tops? What is happening to older buildings in Los Angeles? These and other questions will be answered.
Our speaker for this program is Dave McMenamin, a native Angeleno and life-long resident of our city, residing in La Crescenta and Shadow Hills for the past 33 years. Mr. McMenamin has a degree in Mathematics from Occidental College and a Masters and Ph.D. in Economics from UCLA. He is currently Director of Education for Las Angelitas and works with the Los Angeles Conservancy.

The Rancho Camulos Museum's celebration of Dolores Del Rio’s 1928 movie
Ramona
will feature a day of
Ramona-
themed activities. This full-length silent film, once considered lost but now recovered and restored, is one of four American-made
Ramona
films based on Helen Hunt Jackson’s 1884 novel of the same name.
The
Ramona
connection is one of the reasons Rancho Camulos became a National Historic Landmark in 2000. It is still the only National Historic Landmark in Ventura County.
Preceding the 3:00 PM screening, internationally recognized film historian Hugh Monro Neely will share the amazing history and backstory of this Edwin Carew directed epic. Earlier in the day Mr. Neely will also do a presentation on the DW Griffith 1910 Ramona starring Mary Pickford that was filmed on location at Rancho Camulos and is regularly shown as part of their docent led tours.
Visitors can also take docent-led tours of the historic buildings, visit exhibits such as the new Tataviam Interpretive area, and engage with living history characters. Step back in time at Rancho Camulos, where the history, myth, and romance of old California still linger.

Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum
An 1868 Afternoon Tea in Pleasant Valley
In observance of the Pleasant Valley School District’s 150th anniversary, a skit will be performed
on November 11, at 12:30 and again at 2 PM at the Pleasant Valley Historical Society Museum and gazebo (720 Las Posas Road, Camarillo).
The skit will deal with Effa Davenport (at whose home the afternoon tea will take place), Rebecca Mahan, and Polly Sisson, who will meet to discuss the lack of a school in Pleasant Valley in 1868. They were the wives of the men who were responsible for chartering the Pleasant Valley School District 150 years ago.
We are one of a few California districts to have been given the opportunity to educate children in three different centuries: the 19th, 20th, and 21st. The event is open to the public without charge and will include some fun activities for the children.

Did you ever wonder how this uniquely American holiday really got started? Most people never even heard of Thanksgiving until Sarah Hale introduced it in 1827. Sarah shares her passionate and unrelenting 40 year campaign to create a national day of Thanks in the midst of the Civil War. This story features direct quotes from her editorials and letters to and from five Presidents. Sarah’s story is an authentic representation of how a woman on a mission can get the job done!
This performance is presented by the Heritage Harmony Players and includes a cast of 7, with a cameo appearance by “President Abraham Lincoln”, when he proclaims a national day of Thanks in 1863. The multimedia presentation includes powerpoint background visuals and live music, with audience sing alongs to classic Thanksgiving songs.
Researched, written and presented by Connie Korenstein, living history re-enactor and four time winner of “Uncle Leo’s Stories of Ventura County” Contest.

Anacapa Island and the Channel Islands National Park
Covering just over a square mile and located about 12 miles from the nearest mainland in Oxnard, Anacapa Island may be small in size, but it’s rich with history — from sheepherders and rum runners to shipwrecks and a lighthouse.
Anacapa is comprised of three small islets; East, Middle, and West. Exploration is permitted on the east islet, accessed via the Landing Cove, and a small beach on the west islet called Frenchys Cove. The middle islet and most of the western islet remain a wilderness area set aside for nesting seabirds, like the endangered California Brown Pelican.

Victorian Christmas at the Banning Museum has been an annual holiday tradition in the greater Los Angeles Area for over 30 years. The Museum grounds are transformed into a Christmas Festival featuring Victorian period entertainment, walk-thru tours of the festively decorated Banning Mansion, blacksmith demonstrations, refreshments, family holiday crafts, a bake sale, local food vendors, handmade crafts by area artisans, and Jolly ‘Ole St. Nick himself will pose for photos with the little ones in an historic carriage. One of the highlights of the festivities is a horse-drawn trolley ride to the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, also in Wilmington.

Internationally syndicated cartoonist Leigh Rubin loves to draw cows. He started his own greeting card company in 1978 and in 1984 he began drawing Rubes, a daily cartoon featuring wisecracking cows, bears, bunnies, and other denizens of the animal kingdom. Rubin is also a Nipomo resident and one of DANA’s neighbors.
Rubin’s work can be seen at the San Luis Obispo Botanical garden, where his whimsical rabbit illustrations dot the path that winds through the children’s area. He also managed to work in at least two cows (one wearing a bunny costume, of course) into the display. Members of the DANA team are consulting with Rubin now to imagine creative ways that his cows could be integrated into the native garden landscape around the historic adobe—a fitting nod to the Rancho-era cattle industry that once operated on this land.

Vaquero Campfires
The Vaquero legends were told through oral storytelling passed from one generation to the next, often around campfires. It would be the preservation of the California Vaquero story that would drive Lou Hengehold, owner of The Mill in Santa Paula, to host his first Vaquero inspired hand-made horse gear show in the late 1970’s. It would start a tradition that would span over three decades under the roof of The Mill, which now houses the Agriculture Museum of Ventura County.
Vaquero Campfires
is a nostalgic look back at the eye catching displays of silver-studded saddles, hand-woven rawhide ropes and antique bits and spurs that once lined the former feed store’s warehouse, the space where talented artisans and old-timers would share their Vaquero collections with the public and trade a bit, a saddle or even a story.

Tattooed & Tenacious: Inked Women in California History
Explore the rich and surprising history of women and tattoos in California at CIMM’s newest exhibit.
While many may think of tattoos as a recent trend, inked women have a long history in California. From the working-class Tattooed Ladies who performed in circus sideshows to the upper-class inked women who helped popularize the tattoo craze, visitors will discover the largely unknown history of women and tattoos through photographs, personal histories, and artifacts. “We are so excited to share the remarkable stories of these women and connect them with tattooing today,” said Heather Behrens, Curator and Collections Manager at CIMM.

California Women Artists Emerge, 1860-1960
Pasadena Museum of History is proud to present this landmark fine art exhibition of over 250 works, offering a new appreciation of the women who defied gender and expectation in an era of inequality. Although some achieved name recognition, the exhibition focuses on historically important yet unknown and underappreciated artists and the role they played in shaping California’s arts and culture over 100 years. In order to showcase as many works as possible, the galleries will be partially re-installed with numerous additional artworks in January 2019.

Kit Carson Exhibit
Kit Carson,1809-1868, was a famous American mountain man, Indian fighter, scout and soldier who helped implement the westward expansion of the United States. One of the battles he participated in during the Mexican-American War, was the Battle of Rio San Gabriel, 3/4 miles from the Lobo Adobe (later the Juan Matias Sanchez Adobe). Come learn about a forgotten American legend.

Taminaru: A Day in the Life of a Japanese American Fishing Village
One hundred years ago, Terminal Island, in the Port of Los Angeles, was home to a thriving community of 3,000 Japanese American fishermen and cannery workers. Using the skills honed in their ancestral home of Wakayama-ken prefecture, the Japanese Americans' labor contributed to the phenomenal success of the West Coast fishing industry. After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Terminal Islanders were evicted and sent to internment camps. Today very little traces remain of a once-thriving community.
The exhibit Taminaru, curated by Naomi Hirahara and Tara Fansler, documents a typical day in the life of the Terminal Islanders.

Man-of-War: Adventures Aboard a Fighting Ship
Staged aboard His Majesty's sixth-rate British Royal Navy frigate,
HMS Surprise
, the new exhibit transports visitors back in time 200 years to the wooden world of the fighting sailing ship. This interactive exhibit encourages visitors of all ages to learn what it was like to live as cabin boy, marine, sailor, midshipman, surgeon, and captain on a "man-of-war" from the age of sail.
According to Dr. Raymond Ashley, Ph.D., K.C.I., President/CEO of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, "Man-of-War is an adventure the entire family can enjoy without leaving the dock." Walk the length of her gun deck, sit in the captain's cabin, visit the surgeon's berth, and stand at the helm. You'll see and hear the sights and sounds of dramatic battles at sea, with
Surprise
's fearsome guns answering those of her enemies. Dr. Ashley adds, "Much like all of our interior and interactive exhibits on display throughout the Museum's historic fleet, this experience aboard
HMS Surprise
is free and included with general admission to the Maritime Museum of San Diego."
HMS Surprise
is a replica of that most famous ship in author Patrick O'Brien's series of historical novels chronicling the naval career of Captain Jack Aubrey. In 2003 she was featured in the 20th Century Fox epic drama
Master and Commander
, starring Russell Crowe in the role of Aubrey. Since then the
Surprise
has been part of the Maritime Museum of San Diego's fleet of historic and replica vessels.
Maritime Museum's Librarian, Curator and Collections Manager Kevin Sheehan, Ph.D. adds, "we encourage visitors to learn about some of the curious expressions that sailors used to describe their life on board, find out how to fire one of the guns, and experience the thrill for adventure that called so many to this life, despite its hardships."

Camp Roberts Museum
New Military Exhibits
Camp Roberts opened as the U.S. Army's largest basic training installation in mid-1941, just prior to us entering World War II. For the last 30 years, the volunteers at the Camp Roberts Historical Museum have been preserving and relating the camp's long and important role in our nation's defense, through WWII and the Korean War, and up to its current role as the main training site for the California Army National Guard. The camp also hosts training units from all the other US military components, regular and reserve, as well as those from allied nations.
There are always new museum exhibits for guests to enjoy. Since the big expansion of the large Afghanistan Exhibit, museum volunteers have completed an Army field mess exhibit, a Vietnam era field hospital exhibit, and are building a new exhibit on helicopter training close to their Cobra attack helicopter. They are also hard at work on expanding and upgrading the large picnic and event center at the Main Museum. It is the largest Army museum complex in California and the state's official military museum. Enjoy the Museum's featured history video, research library, gift shop, and the Wall of Fame (including Robert Mitchum, Steve Allen, Bob Newhart, Red Skelton, and William Holden).

Adamson House Fumigation
Nov 9-12
The Adamson House will be closed for Fumigation/Tenting from November 9-12. No garden tour or house tours will be offered on either Friday November 9 or Saturday November 10. The site itself will remain open except for any areas to the east of property. The house will be re-opened for General Public Tours on November 14 from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, with the last tour starting at 2:00 pm. Our apologies for any inconvenience endured.
