Volunteer Spokane's
Corporate Spotlight
For years Guardian Life Insurance has been partnering with United Way and doing an amazing job with volunteer efforts and investments that address critical needs in the Spokane community!
Just this year Guardian purchased and assembled 100 backpacks with over 15 school supply items, hygiene products and snacks for students at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC). SFCC has 5,664 students. 21% of their students are minorities and more than 1,700 are first generation college students. In addition they have 247 students with documented disabilities. The backpacks with the 15+ items are intended to reduce financial stress that some of these students might face as they further their education and skills.
Guardian is also partnering with United Way to invest resources and their staff time in a new virtual volunteer opportunity using a platform called Vello. Vello allows their staff to volunteer time (30 minutes once a week) while at their desks to virtually read and tutor students who are struggling with their reading. We are targeting this effort in a rural school district with limited access to volunteer assistance. The goal of Vello is to improve the reading skills of the students and to provide an easy and impactful volunteer experience.
