Raising Godly leaders for a country in need
August 2018

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. We pray you have all had a wonderful summer season and are preparing for a beautiful fall. Uganda has dry and rainy seasons. It has two growing seasons which is really important in a country where many live off the land around them. In the U.S. families are winding down from the summer and a new year of school is beginning. In Uganda, the school year for primary and s         econdary grades follow the standard calendar year,
though universities and vocational schools follow a similar schedule as that in the U.S.   We just sent off this year's 5 University freshmen.

We are thankful to have our Genesis Nursery and Primary school to offer quality academics as well as Bible training and a Biblical world view to the younger children in our sponsorship program as well as some children from the community. The country's school system is structured with 7 primary grades and 6 secondary grades. Many children attend school inconsistently as family funds allow with many still attending primary school as teens and aging into their 20's during secondary school. Many are not able to pass the national standardized exam that is required in order to move on to secondary school. Another national exam is required at the end of the 4 th year in secondary school, or Senior 4 as it is called, and one more at the end of Senior 6. Exam scores determine if a student moves on and schools are highly competitive to accept the students who score well.

Passing all of these national exams and qualifying for quality schools at the next level is extremely difficult with the many challenges of poverty including malnutrition, low education levels of parents, poor teaching methods and financial constraints for the parents and schools.   Higher education options vary extremely in quality and there is no standardization among them, making it impossible to move between institutions without starting over.

As a ministry we work hard to locate the best and most reasonably priced schools for our sponsored kids. Commonly, the better schools are boarding schools as Ugandan parents appreciate the benefits of consistent meals, a good study environment and supervision. Some of our kids come from very difficult home circumstances and boarding school meets many of the needs that these homes cannot while preparing them for a more hopeful future.

Rose, now age 17, is an example of this. She lost her father at a very young age and her older siblings married young and moved on and were not able to help Rose and her widowed mother. As a young girl she worked the gardens of neighbors and even begged at times to feed herself and her mother and to pay for her school expenses.
Rose excelled in school in spite of missing months at a time to work.   One day Rose boldly approached one of the ministry workers, telling her story and asking for help. This was the beginning of a new wonderful journey that she calls "life of love, mercy and compassion and from nothing to something."
Rose finally received help in 2013 and is now attending high school in one of the best girl's schools in Uganda. She is excelling and has renewed hope. She is in a girl's club at school that helps to empower other young girls and encourages them to strive for the best. Rose is so grateful to God for the help rendered to her when all seemed to be lost. She is active at school in the Bible Union and at home with the youth and church choir. She motivates others and encourages them not to give up. We have hope for Rose as God works in her life to become a Godly leader for her country.

Higher Education
Making a difference

The costs of university and vocational training rise every year and limit the options of available programs of study to our sponsored students. Your special gift to our Higher Education Fund makes it possible for us to cover these needs that go beyond what sponsorship fees can cover for some of our young people. Many universities are now requiring computers for online books and research and many vocational schools require students to provide their own equipment, tools and supplies. Boarding supplies are also increasing in cost.
