When San Diego County public school employees sexually harass a student or colleague, they may be transferred to another job or school site, rather than fired, public records show.

That's true of both tenured educators - who enjoy job protections that can make termination onerous for public schools - as well as non-teaching public school employees. As a result, employees investigated for sexual misconduct are sometimes shuffled place to place within school districts or between school districts, leaving parents, students and staff unaware of prior misbehavior, an investigation by Voice of San Diego found.

Autistic people generally want the same things in life that our typical peers do, regardless of where we fall on the spectrum: a sense of purpose, independence, human relationships and things to do. But most of us are unsure how to achieve these objectives.

In the past several years, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) has highlighted research addressing 'lifespan issues,' such as housing and employment. The findings confirm what many of us know from experience: Although autistic adults are employed at rates higher than for any other group of disabled adults, only 42 percent of us have jobs in the years following high school - a gloomy statistic, at best1. What happens to autistic people as we get older?

What happens to autistic people as we age is more of a mystery that it appears, because the definition of autism has changed so much in the lifetime of most Americans living today. Changes to diagnostic criteria (as defined in the DSM guide) in the 1990s resulted in thousands of young people being diagnosed. These diagnoses were often done in association with public schools, when kids exhibited academic or behavioral problems. The revised diagnostic criteria applied to adults too, but there was no comparable mechanism for adult diagnosis, so the surge in diagnoses was primarily among schoolchildren.

Many were bright and verbal, with social or behavioral challenges. They stood in sharp contrast to previously diagnosed autistics, who had more obvious verbal and cognitive disabilities. Autism had a fearsome reputation. Parents were frightened by the labels affixed to their children. After hearing that "there was no cure," prompt and aggressive intervention seemed to offer the best hope. That led a push for early identification that continues to this day, with autism now being diagnosed in toddlers and even infants. Read on...

I am a mother of a 12 year old boy, diagnosed with moderate autism, almost nonverbal. I am having to work more hours, as result he will be under care of different care takers. I am searching for a GPS/Tracker where I could hear his surroundings and if needed talking to him to calming him down. He is not able to use a cell phone so this will not be an option. Project ImPACT for Toddlers (Improving Parents as Communication Teachers) is a Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Intervention (NDBI) designed to coach caregivers of 12-36 month-olds to support their child's development. This approach combines behavioral and developmental strategies to increase social communication and play skills during daily activities.

Training clinical providers such as speech-language and behavioral therapists to become certified Project ImPACT for Toddlers (PI for Toddlers) providers is a large part of the process for helping disseminate this highly respected and effective intervention to families of children considered at risk for autism or other communication and developmental delays. Collaboration with parents is key to generalization of social-communication skills across a variety of social situations, and ultimately empowers parents. It builds their confidence, as they recognize their interaction can affect their child's communication. TERI Crimson's clinical director, Karyn Lewis Searcy, M.A. CCC-SLP, has been instrumental in the development of PI for Toddlers, having been an active researcher in this project through the BRIDGE Collaborative for more than 10 years. We are offering trainings for interested providers, which includes online modules, in-person training/practice with children, and the option to enroll in the certification process.
