Greetings Tucson NAWIC #122 and Friends!
Hopefully we are all settled into writing 2020 and off to a good year. February has been an exciting time for NAWIC #122.
We hosted the annual February Executive Breakfast at the Arizona Inn on February 12th. We had a good turn out with 32 in attendance. That attendance was split fairly evenly between members and guests. Our speaker, Danny Howe from Pima County One Stop, gave us plenty of good information on programs available to employers and offered assistance with getting background checks for challenged employees. NAWIC made their official scholarship presentations to Angelica Loaiza and Ana Ochoa. We hope to hear more from these two ladies in the future. NAWIC Chapter #122 also presented the WIC of the Year award to
Tracy Miller
for going above and beyond for NAWIC #122. Tracy has excelled in her efforts with our annual bowling tournament this past year, doubling the income from that event, as well as increasing membership by 50% as membership committee chair. Congrats to Tracy! Please remember, this award is an honor and all members are eligible. Next year it could be you.

We had information on the tables reminding members of the opportunity to serve on the NAWIC board. The nominating committee met on February 19th. Please be thinking about how you would like to participate for the next Fiscal year starting in September. In addition to serving on the board, maybe there is a committee you would like to be involved in. There are many to choose from We all have different passions. Find yours and be a part of our mission. Here’s a sampling of the committee opportunities out there:
- Block Kids
- Bowling Committee Cornerstone
- Gaslight Theater
- Membership Committee
- NEF Draft and Design
- Newsletter Nominating Committee
- SACCD
- Safety & Health
- Scholarship Committee
- Social Media
- Website
- WIC Week
Please also note, there are other committees listed on the National website. Last year
Colleen Edwards
noted that NAWIC #122 did not have a Safety & Health Committee and she began working on that. If you see something that we could be doing, but are not at this time, and would like to get that up and running, that too is an option. We want all members to be a part of our Chapter and find their place here. Working together is how we succeed!
And be prepared for March. Our WIC Week Committee has a f
abulous
week planned for us. These ladies ROCK! And I just can’t wait to experience it!
Honored to be your president,
Sandy Lipe

Thank You To Our Raffle Sponsor, Ann Vargas, Habitat for Humanity Tucson
Ann Vargas has played a significant role in local, state-wide and federal housing and community development programs with a primary focus on public-private projects designed to improve the quality of life for vulnerable residents. She is an alumnus of the University of Arizona School of Geography and Development. Vargas spent over 25 years as the Project Supervisor/Project Manager for the City of Tucson’s federally-funded Department of Housing and Community Development. She played a key role in the mixed-use development in downtown Tucson for projects that leveraged investment from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants and partnerships. In addition to working for the Department of Housing and Community Development, she has served as a housing policy analyst for The State of California Department of Housing. Design Drafting Competition
Our chapter is proud to announce the upcoming
NAWIC Education Foundation’s Design Drafting Competition. The competition is designed to introduce students to the construction industry in a positive and challenging manner, to foster a self-worth, to build confidence in the participants, and to encourage mentoring programs between students, educators and the industry.
Their design problem this year is to create a Visitor Center for the USS Cod Submarine Memorial in Cleveland, Ohio along the North Coast Harbor. The design should consider use by large groups of school children (K-12) or clusters of adults from bus tours, singles and local families, visitors from abroad, current and former military members. The submarine itself houses most of the exhibits; however, the Visitors Center and the submarine should be extensions of one another to tell the story and honor its engineering marvel and the people that were a part of submarine history. Aesthetics and the treatment of materials should acknowledge the other recent buildings around the site. When designing, they are to think about the site, views of the harbor, placement with regards to entering and viewing the submarine and honoring this engineering marvel and the United States submariners. The national winner of the competition may be the conceptual designer for the actual build. How amazing that would be for the student? All parts of the space must comply with ADA accessibility requirements. This project is near and dear to our CADD chairwoman,
Jan Marshall's, heart as her Dad served in the Navy as a submariner for 20 years.
This year NAWIC Tucson Chapter #122 is proud to sponsor the Design Drafting Competition. We have six students from Canyon Del Oro High School participating under their instructor, Josh Ronstadt. We are seeking financial sponsors for the cash awards and other expenses of the competition such as the awards dinner. We hope to raise $1500 which includes $600 in prize money and would like each participant to leave the contest with gift certificates and merchandise. We would like to invite the participants and their parents as well as their instructor to the awards ceremony at our April dinner meeting. In addition, we would like to give our judges gifts for offering their time and expertise to the competition. The judging for the competition is being held this month and the prizes will be awarded at our April membership/dinner meeting. NAWIC Tucson Chapter #122 truly appreciates our supporters who help to foster education in our community and support the construction industry and NAWIC. Please contact me if you have any questions at all. We hope you will be able to help us this year financially with our project. Pleas click the links below for sponsorship information.
Please address any questions to our NEF Draft & Design committee:
