Greetings CASC'ers,

The Mid-term election is only 6 days away! To be prepared to vote on November 6 we highly encourage to checkout the Michigan Secretary of State Office website for voter information like location of polling place and a sample ballot. 

If you are interested in future volunteer work with CASC's today is deadline to submit your feedback to the CASC S tudent Advisory Board. The board will create volunteer opportunities for CASC students based on interests and availability


Additionally, w e are currently offering an opportunity for students to engage the life, legacy and work of James and Grace Lee Boggs by being part of the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center Tour visit in Detroit on November 2. For more information check out the CASC News section below. We hope you can make the events. Don't miss out!

Senior Audit

Course Enrollment Petitions:  Students must submit a petition found on the CASC website to enroll in SW 300, 305 (section 1 & 2), and SW 401. If there are any questions or concerns, please email   [email protected] .

CASC-MSW Preferred Admissions Program
Students pursuing a Community Action and Social Change (CASC) minor may apply to the Office of Student Services (OSS)  in the School of Social Work for the Preferred Admission Program leading to a Master of Social Work (MSW) as early as their junior year.  For admissions criteria and additional information, visit the preferred admissions  website.

Mind Matters: Head Talks 
Head Talks is a Ted Talk style seminar about mindfulness, mental health/wellness and positive psychology.  Lexi Dubreuil, senior Business Student, President of Mind Matters Mental Health Initiative and Community Action and Social Change minor, is bringing in professionals to speak on the amazing work they have done in the mindfulness, mental health, and positive psychology space. This event is cosponsored by the CASC Minor.

Volunteer with CASC 
We invite you to participate in our new volunteer initiative, led by the CASC Student Advisory Board! If you are interested in future volunteering opportunities we ask you to fill out  this form  to get a gauge of the volunteer projects CASC students want to be a part of.  The deadline to submit your responses is Friday, October 31

Boggs Center Visit 
Hosted by Semester in Detroit, Community Action and Social Change Undergraduate Minor, and the School of Social Work, the Boggs Center visit will  explore Detroit based grassroots organizing efforts and the history of community centered activism. The visit will begin with a short bus tour of the Boggs Center, Boggs School, and conclude at the Cass Commons with a panel discussion among local community organizers. Students who plan to attend must RSVP to join.

Funding for Student Orgs
Opportunities for CASC students to apply for funding for their student organizations are now available!  Deadline for this semester is November 2nd. 

CASC Media Assistant Position 
The media assistant position will be employed by  CASC  in the School of Social Work in order  to  lead the  minor 's virtual outreach, and enhance our co-curricular efforts. In this role, student staff will serve as primary lead for weekly newsletter communications, social media, and broader digital outreach. Additional responsibilities include developing graphic design materials and video editing. The media assistant must also be available  to  attend and support events organized by  CASC   Minor  staff, faculty, and students. This is a work-study only position but opened to both undergraduate and graduate students. 7-10 hours per week commitment.  Deadline is November 5. Criminalization and the Carceral State 
The Carceral State Project 2018-19 Symposium  is the first major undertaking hosted by the University of Michigan Carceral State Project. The Symposium series will feature six roundtable discussions that interrogate the meaning of the carceral state-broadly defined-and its intersection with criminalization, policing, containment, surveillance, activism, and community building.

Michigan Affordability and Advocacy Coalition (MAAC) Statement Piece
MAAC is partnering with the Michigan Daily to produce a Statement piece on internship funding. MAAC is looking for students to submit an 800-1200 word article about experiences having an unpaid (or insufficiently paid) internships. Deadline to submit articles is November 15. Gender Revolution in the Trump Era: Transformations in Consciousness and Gender Relations
Explore the rapid transformation in gender consciousness and gender relations during this workshop with Dr. Pamela Aronson. Attendees will discuss changes stemming from three primary sources: the rise of women running for political office in 2018, the emergence of new social movement activism, and the creation of the "#MeToo" movement, which has sparked a new public discourse on sexual assault and harassment.

Building Power: Organizing Effectively Against White Supremacy Conference

Raise the Bar Volunteers
The University of Michigan Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Center (SAPAC) is loo
king for new volunteers to facilitate and evaluate workshops for their Raise the Bar program, which is designed to decrease the incidences of sexual and gender-based violence among University students within the Ann Arbor community, by providing tailored two-hour interactive workshops to bar staff on the subjects of sexual misconduct and bystander intervention. Global Scholars Program (GSP)
GSP  is an interdisciplinary academic living learning community that brings together international and U.S. sophomores, juniors, and seniors to engage in social justice education on a global level. Hands of Hope Internship 
Hands of Hope is Casa de Esperanza's internship program which recruits recent college graduates and other highly qualified young adults, from throughout the United States. These interns have a desire to help abused, neglected and HIV positive children through work with their agency. Development Summer Internship Program (D-SIP)

UM Summer Enrichment Program (SEP)

Center for Socially Engaged Design  (C-SED) 
C-SED recognizes design teams that demonstrate substantial attention to social, cultural, economic, and environmental contexts in their design process and presentation with the Socially Engaged Design Awards. Any student project team participating in Design Expo is eligible to enter their project for consideration.  All design teams from across campus are invited to participate in Design Expo. Luce Scholars Program 2019-2020
Boren Fellowship
Boren Fellowship are awarded to graduate students for the purpose of overseas language study, academic study, research (either Master's or Ph.D. level), an academic internship, or any combination of the above. In addition, Boren Fellowships can provide limited funding for domestic language study that will supplement the overseas component. Application deadline is January 30. Learn more and apply
