RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS
Doctoral student Mauryne Abwao’s book chapter titled “Media, Culture, and Framing of Disability in Kenya’s Daily Nation Newspaper” has been published in Jeffress. M (Ed) book titled Disability Representation in Film, TV, and Print Media and published by Routledge Taylor & Francis Group. This book chapter is published out of her master’s thesis. The chapter discusses the need for ample and healthy portrayals of disability and neurodiversity as a way of understanding various disability conditions. She co-authored this chapter with her former thesis chair, Dr. Suman Mishra, from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. The work of a prominent scholar Beth Haller is also featured in the book. The book chapter details can be found here.  

Lisa McLendon, Bremner Editing Center coordinator, was mentioned in this KU News story about Assistant Professor Robert Unckless receiving a prestigious Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award from the National Science Foundation (NSF): "Unckless credits the university-sponsored CAREER workshop, including Doug Bornemann, Lisa McLendon and the other participants, for useful guidance and feedback during the award application process."

Steve Rottinghaus, career and outreach coordinator, was honored to introduce Mary Lou Bowen, his high school journalism teacher, as the newest faculty member in Washburn Rural High School's hall of fame on April 8 in Topeka. Rottinghaus served as the editor of the Blue Streak, the school's student newspaper, in 1985-86.
KU Information Technology and the Center for Online & Distance Learning (CODL) have partnered to create several webinars focusing on creating accessible content. These webinars will help faculty and staff learn about providing and creating accessible files, videos, course content and more. COVID-19 vaccinations are now open for all KU employees and students. Kansas moved into Phase 5 of vaccine distribution on March 29, which means anyone over the age of 16 is eligible for the vaccine. Get more information about vaccine appointments and clinics here.

Graduation reminder for class of 2021
The J-School is planning a pre-recorded video graduate commemoration that will be posted on the J-School YouTube channel. The video will remain there all year for viewing anytime. We are inviting graduates to send photos to [email protected] for inclusion in the video. (Deadline is April 30 for inclusion in the video.) We also are inviting graduates to send senior reflections to be posted on the J-School website (see examples of 2020 senior reflections here.) The Jim Nantz Award is presented every spring to the nation’s most outstanding collegiate sportscaster. The award is named in honor of the award-winning CBS sports broadcaster who exemplifies the best of the industry on and off the air. Deadline to apply is April 16. Learn more here.

The Fred Young Hearst Television Producing Fellowship is now accepting applications until April 16. Candidates must be May 2021 graduates with an interest in a career as a television news producer. Learn more here.

Creativity and Culture in Rome is a four-week study abroad opportunity (July 1-31) for students studying marketing and strategic communication. The course, J500 led by Professor of the Practice Janet Rose, will focus on helping students develop the ability to immerse, observe, understand and connect with people and culture in context. Deadline to apply is April 20. Adobe XD expert assists J212 students
Matt Rae, a design advocate with the Adobe XD Product Design team, joined Heather Lawrenz and J212 graphic design students virtually last week to demonstrate new features in XD and helped them get started. Rae has led multiple Behance Live sessions. 
EVENTS
Baron to accept National Citation during online event April 21
Martin Baron, retired executive editor of The Washington Post, will accept the William Allen White National Citation award in a virtual event at 4 p.m. April 21 during an online discussion with J-School students, faculty, staff, trustees and alumni. The event also will be open to the public. Baron was selected as the 2020 National Citation recipient and was scheduled to receive the award and give an address on the KU campus last April, but the event was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. ALUMNI UPDATE
J-School graduate Travis Goff hired as KU athletics director
Travis Goff, j’03, c'03, was introduced last week as the new director of athletics for the University of Kansas. Goff returns to KU from Northwestern University, where he was deputy director of athletics and assistant vice president. During the press conference on Thursday, Goff mentioned Professor Chuck Marsh and the J-School as contributing factors in his development: "I apply the skills I learned in my time as a student here — in particular the journalism school — every day."
