64 SECONDS to Learn Up To  25 THINGS about St. Louis Park High School
February 28, 2020

1:   From the Principal
It was another great week with many examples of PRIDE at SLPHS.  Students and staff contributed to our Black History Month Performance.  It was a great display of "E"xcellence as their hard work and creative energy coalesced in a powerful and informative performance.  A special thanks to our advisor and GLC D.J. Singer for his organization of the performance.  Together with student leader Zoe Younger, they were able to model "P"urpose as they educated us on some important aspects of Black history while connecting them to our current lives. "D"ependability was also evident as many students shared their voices and talents while they entertained and informed us.

Congratulations to John Myszkowski for being named a semi-finalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Myszkowski is one of 36 teachers that are moving closer to becoming named Teacher of the Year.  In his classroom and as a colleague John exemplifies "E"xcellence.  He believes in and expects the best from his students.  Each year it is great to watch the progression of our students as they learn with Mr. Myszkowski.  I have had the great fortune of working with John as a colleague at the Middle School and at the High School.  I have consistently seen him seek to honor the voices of his students.  Good Luck John as the process continues!

The panel will now review the semifinalists' portfolios and video submissions in late March in order to select approximately 10 finalists.

The State Coach of the Year is selected from among the top coaches across each state and receives an award certificate and recognition at the NHSSCA National Conference Awards Dinner in Minneapolis in mid-June.

Gust has taught science at St. Louis Park High School for 16 years and has served as Strength and Conditioning Coach for the past 11 years. She holds a bachelor's degree in biology from Hamline University and a master's degree in applied kinesiology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

12:  Conducting a Financially Aware College Search
A recent national study reported that tuition discount rates at private colleges reached a record 52.2% for freshman. Learn how you can increase your likelihood of capturing some of these savings! My goal is to help you identify colleges that might be a good financial fit (based on anticipated aid) for your family's budget before your child applies to college.

The course will be delivered in two separate class sessions. We will use detailed case studies to focus on how colleges make decisions around financial aid and what the implications are for you. There is also a hands-on component where you can search for the financial aid histories of colleges that your child might be interested in attending.

The Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCA) are state tests in reading, mathematics, and science that are used to meet federal and state legislative requirements. The tests are administered every year to measure student performance relative to the Minnesota Academic Standards that specify what students in a particular grade should know and be able to do. By passing the MCA, students show proficiency in high school mathematics. Juniors will be taking the MCA Math test on March 17 and 18, 2020. An MCA score can also be used to show a student is college-ready therefore not have to take remedial math classes in college, as this test can be used to replace the ACCUPLACER.

Students will also have the opportunity to increase their grades in their current math class depending on their proficiency level as assessed by the MCA.
