Principal's Message
Cubberley Home-School Compact

The Cubberley Home-School Compact was recently revised and approved by our School Site Council and will be available during Parent Conference Days— November 5 through 9 and November 13. This compact is an agreement between students, parents, and staff members to work together to maximize the students’ educational experience here at Cubberley. When all parties are working together for the benefit of the students, everyone wins.

Elementary teachers will provide copies to each family during parent conference days. Middle School students will review the pledge during their period 1 class and will bring the pledge home to be signed. The main tenants of the pledge are as follows:

Student Pledge

I realize that my education is important to me. I understand that a good education will provide me with the tools I need to be a productive citizen. As a student, I will follow the Steps to Success and be responsible for:

  • Wearing appropriate school attire
  • Following instructions of all school personnel
  • Keeping my hands, feet, objects, and unpleasant words to myself
  • Being ready to work when the bell rings
  • Showing pride and respect for myself, others, and the school campus
  • Following all classroom rules
  • Working as hard as I can on all school projects
  • Completing and turning in my homework
  • Reading at least 20 minutes each night
  • Taking corrected work and school communications to my parents or guardians promptly

Parent Pledge

As the parent or guardian, I pledge to guide my child in the education process by:

  • Providing a quiet area and study time at home
  • Making sure my children are well rested, appropriately dressed, on time to school, and prepared to learn
  • Assisting my children with their homework assignments on a regular basis
  • Reading to or encouraging my children to read at least 20 minutes each night
  • Attending Back-to-School Night, Open House, and other school-wide functions, including parent-teacher conferences
  • Actively support district, school, and classroom policies

Faculty-Teacher Pledge

The Cubberley School faculty is committed to the academic success of every student and we agree to:

  • Teach grade-level skills and concepts as described by the Common Core State Standards
  • Strive to address the individual needs of every student
  • Communicate with you and your child regarding academic progress. Communication will include report cards, School Loop for middle school, mid-reporting period of unsatisfactory notices if necessary, and telephone calls home, as appropriate
  • Encourage and support parent volunteers in the classroom

Please take time to review the student portion of the Cubberley Home-School Compact with your children and be sure to sign the compact before returning it to your teacher. We thank you in advance for your support of Cubberley School.

Literature Club Volunteers
Middle School Literature Club needs volunteers to review the monthly reading logs and distribute classroom rewards. We meet once a month (usually under an hour) after processing the log sheets from home at our leisure. That's right...from home!

So if you've always wanted to help, but felt the time constraints didn't fit your schedule, this may be the perfect match for you! Please contact Frances Fisher for more detailed information at (562) 446-4672 or skitzofrannie@aol.com.
New Member November
Now that the school year is in full swing, it’s time to get serious about our PTA membership goals. Our ultimate goal is one PTA member per student…and we need your help! Membership is easy, and it does not mean you have to volunteer, but it does give you a voice in the issues that
affect our students. $8 for the year is all that’s required.

This year we have a couple of new contests we hope will help motivate you. Please consider purchasing memberships for your extended families, neighbors, or anyone else that would want to see Cubberley be the best it can be!

New Member November Contest- $100
The classroom/homeroom with the most new members in the month of November will receive $100 in Scholastic dollars to spend on classroom needs.

100% Classroom Participation Contest- $100
+ $5 Gift Certificates for Each Student
The first classroom/homeroom to reach 100% membership will receive $100 in Scholastic dollars for the teacher to spend on classroom needs, and each student in the class will receive $5 in Book Bucks to spend at the book fair the first week in December.

Joining is Easy! Fill out an envelope (available in front of the office) and send in cash or a check (payable to Cubberley PTA) or enroll online. Be sure to leave your student’s name and grade or homeroom in the comments.

Feel free to contact Keri Reed at keri.reed.LB@gmail.com with any questions regarding how classroom percentages are calculated, or any other membership questions. Room parents will be notified what percentage your classroom is at currently so you can work on getting to 100% as a team.

Giving Back From The Garden
Garden Club has chosen the theme of giving back from our school garden programs this school year. Any overage from our harvest will be donated to Food Finders, and there are plans to have a special garden bed for that organization as well. With proceeds from our plant sales last year, Garden Club purchased 2 wrought iron benches for Mrs. Wynne and Mrs. Flagg. Future plans include purchasing and caring for plants in our school office. Garden Club is open to 5th through 8th grade and meets during their lunch hour every Tuesday.

As usual, the 7th Grade Garden was the first of our school gardens to get underway. This garden is done through the 7th grade Health Class, taught by Mr. Cleven, to further educate the students on healthy eating habits. A salad garden comprised of different types of lettuces, radishes, and carrots were planted last month. The students not only planted this garden, but are responsible for the watering and maintenance of it as well. At the end of the semester, the students will partake in a salad bar from their harvest.

We elected to start the elementary garden a few weeks later than usual due to the extremely hot weather we have experienced the past few years, as it was not healthy for our younger students, nor for our garden. We had extra help with quite a few of the younger students who were willing to give up playground time during their lunch period and before school in order to help prepare the beds and clean-up the surrounding area. Planting started last week with radishes, lettuce, and some herb seedlings where a small lesson on seeds and seedlings was given. We will be finishing up this week with planting spinach, kale, and Swiss chard.

A big thank you as always goes to the PTA that funds and supports this enrichment for our students from kindergarten through eighth Grade. It is hard to believe that this program started just 8 years ago with garden tools from garage sales, $20.00 in seed money from the PTA, and a lot of faith!

Please remember that the Long Beach Unified School District requires all students in kindergarten through 8th grade to wear a school uniform. At Cubberley, this includes a solid white, navy, or light blue top and navy bottoms. Middle school students may also choose red shirts and dark denim or khaki bottoms. Spirit Wear is also encouraged.

Please click here for the full guidelines on Cubberley Academic Attire. We appreciate your continued support!
Send a Note for Student Absences
Regular, on-time attendance is most important for success at school. Parents are strongly urged to send their child to school on time every day, unless he or she is ill. (Please plan family vacations around the school calendar.)

Phone calls will not be accepted to excuse absences. Instead, a written note from the parent or guardian is required. The note should be sent with the student upon return, and given to the teacher, or may be emailed to our attendance clerk, Brenda Camrin, at   bcamrin@lbschools.net . Absence notes need to include the child's first and last name, date(s) of absence, reason for absence, and parent/guardian signature.

Children returning after having a contagious disease will need to be readmitted through the nurse's office.

If your child is late to school and arrives before 9:30, they may go straight to class. A child arriving after 9:30 needs to check in with the office before going to class. Exception: if your child was at school, signed out and returned to school the same day, the office needs to have the return time filled in on the sign-out sheet.

If a student goes to the doctor or dentist, a note is required from the doctor/dentist for the absence to be excused.

Thank you for your cooperation!
