Parkway UCC November Pulse 2018
Responding to Hate and Violence

Thanks to all those from Parkway UCC who came out to the prayer vigil at Temple Emanuel Monday evening remembering those murdered at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.  There’s opportunity to join others from various faith communities this Friday evening, November 2 around 5:30 pm to stand in support of those entering the temple for 6 pm Friday Shabbat service.  Bring signs of love and support with you.   If you’d like to stay for the service, there is a Shabbat-luck (potluck) after service on this first Friday. Bring a dairy/parve dish to serve 10 people (Parve means something that is neither meat nor dairy.)

The Conference Ministers of the Penn Northeast and Penn West Conferences of the United Church of Christ have encouraged us to send notes of compassion and love to Tree of Life Synagogue on behalf of our congregation.

Send cards to: 5898 Wilkins Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15217
with a return address of: Parkway UCC, 2151 Silas Creek Parkway,
Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Rabbi Mark Cohn shared a number of action steps in his address Monday evening. Among them: be sure to vote; keep reaching out in acts of kindness to those around us; love our family members and friends unconditionally; and keep working to build bonds of interreligious friendship.

The History Of Wentz Food Pantry and Parkway UCC
by Carole Holt
As we enter into Fall and the Season of Giving, it seems like a good time to refresh our memories (and give some new information to those who have joined us in the last couple of years) on the mission that Parkway has had in support of the Wentz Food Pantry.

Wentz started their food pantry in August of 2012. This was to support people in their community by offering a bag of staple food items that would provide enough for about 3 days of food. Wentz volunteers packed bags and the food distribution was the 3 rd Saturday of each month.

I n May of 2014 Parkway offered to help support this ministry by donating a set amount of a couple of food items that were included in their packed bags. Margaret Morris and Liam Hooper were instrumental in getting us off the ground. Over the years we have committed to 50 items of 2 staples. These have included ...

Once a bustling industrial town, Huntington, West Virginia has become the epicenter of America's modern opioid epidemic, with an overdose rate 10 times the national average. This flood of heroin now threatens this Appalachian city with a cycle of generational addiction, lawlessness, and poverty. But within this distressed landscape, Peabody Award-winning filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon shows a different side of the fight against drugs; one of hope.

After the 40-minute film, Captain Tara Tucker, Chair of the Forsyth Community Opioid Task Force and Quality Management Coordinator for the Forsyth County EMS will speak and can address any questions from the audience.

THE SYMBOLISM INCORPORATED INTO PARKWAY
UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST
Article submitted by Peggy Taylor

Purpose of the Symbolism:  The members of this church requested the architect to incorporate as many of the Christian symbols as possible in a building of modern design, keeping in mind the idea that this church is one family in Christ. Here, then, are the ways in which the architect, Mr. E. J. Austin of Southern Pines, N.C., met these requirements. To continue reading click link below.

Waste Free Parkway Campaign
By Ana Tampanna &
Deborah Woolard

Tips for Waste Free Parkway  (Green Faith):
Know What Can Be Recycled Curbside

It is easy to overlook items that can be recycled or to get confused as to which goes where. You should check with your service provider for specifics on your particular program, but here are basic guidelines.

Paper and Cardboard: Paper of all sorts is acceptable, including books, flyers, magazines, junk mail, and colored paper. Avoid waxy papers. Cardboard can be recycled as long as it is not saturated with food and grease, as is common with pizza boxes. Remove liners before recycling cereal or other food boxes.
Plastic: Most recyclable plastics have the numbers on them, often on the bottom, and one through seven are usually accepted. Many disposable utensils cannot be included, unfortunately, due to the low quality blend of plastics used. If you can easily crumple the plastic, such as with a baggie, do not include it in your recycling bin. Plastic bags are not accepted curbside, but your local grocery store may collect them.
Aluminum: In general, all aluminum cans are accepted for recycling. Rinse out liquids, especially sodas and juices, in order to avoid an onslaught of bugs to the area. If you are tight on space, you can crush the cans.
Glass: Most glass containers can be recycled. Rinse them prior to placing them in the bin and avoid breaking them. If glass shatters, it can’t be recycled since the mixing of different colors can contaminate individual batches.
