RISE Summer 2018 Retreat
September 2018

In this newsletter, we will provide an update on some of the many exciting recent activities, accomplishments, and events at RISELab.

Our faculty were honored by major awards and promotions.  Most notably, Professor David Patterson received the Turing Award for his groundbreaking work on the RISC processor. This award is sometimes described as the Nobel Prize for Computer Science, and it is a great honor for which Dave certainly deserves congratulations.  His Turing Award Lecture is a great overview of the computer architecture area, past, present and future.  Patterson will also be among eight other Berkeley Turing Laureates speaking at the ACM A.M. Turing Laureate Colloquium this fall.

More generally, though, this award is a validation of Dave's style of research: the Berkeley five-year lab model, with close interactions between academics and industry, including retreats and everything else with which we have become familiar.  Dave pioneered this approach, and at the RISELab, we are all beneficiaries of it!

We also continue to published influential papers in several top systems and AI venues.  These papers address topics ranging from cryptographic primitives and efficient communication protocols to new frameworks for distributed reinforcement learning and second order optimization methods for neural networks.  The first Ray meetup was also held; the AP released a "bombshell" report on Google's location history, which was prompted by a RISELab blog post on the blurry boundaries associated with Google location tracking; and RISELab publication " Bridging the GAP: Towards Approximate Graph Analytics," won the best paper award at ACM GRADES-NDA 2018.

Professor Michael Jordan authored a widely-discussed blog arguing that the "Artificial Intelligence Revolution" hasn't happened yet; and Professor Michael Mahoney is organizing the semester-long research program on " Foundations of Data Science" at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing.

More details on these and other activities are below.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the upcoming RISE training camp and retreat.
