prez PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Maggie Martensen
Join us for a celebration like no other!

This month we host the 9th Annual Chicago CFO of the Year® Awards Ceremony and the excitement is palpable. Congratulations to our 20 Finalists! You are the best of the best and we are looking forward to recognizing you and honoring you on November 21st. We congratulate you, your teams and your organizations.

CFOs by nature tend to be introspective and avoid the spotlight. At FEI Chicago we consider it an honor to call attention to you and recognizing the tremendous contributions you make. As the role of the CFO continues to evolve and becomes ever more critical, great executives stretch and rise to meet ever growing challenges. Our finalists are transformational leaders who have demonstrated exceptional leadership.

IDEAIDEA COMMITTEE
Expanding Inclusion & Diversity Engagement within FEI
By John Bankhurst, Business Development Director, Salo LLC and IDEA Committee Member

The FEI Chicago Chapter is excited to introduce you to our newest initiative, our IDEA Committee. Much like many of our own organizations, diversity and inclusion are important to the FEI Chicago Board. In order to drive a strong member experience for both new and existing members, the IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity & Engagement Awareness) Committee was formed this summer to build upon the great work of the Strategic Partnership Alliance (SPA) and the Diversity & Inclusion committee. FEI Chicago board member Sharada Sullivan from CBRE is serving as the chair of IDEA. The IDEA committee focuses on partnering with other FEI committees to achieve their goals and the goals of the chapter, while embracing diversity and inclusion to ensure an overall richer and more engaging experience.

For historical perspective, the SPA Committee, formed in 2008, worked to build diversity and inclusion within FEI Chicago - both in partnership with FEI national and through stand-alone local efforts. The committee typically hosted three to four events per year focused on female and minority headline speakers. These meetings provided a focused platform for showcasing diversity. Events were hosted by SPA, and all were welcome.

The primary focus of IDEA is to drive an Inclusive Culture, while Facilitating Member Connectivity. We hope to increase the diversity of membership across all measures (gender, orientation, race, age, etc.). This includes both recruiting new members and retaining existing members.
D&I training for the newly formed IDEA committee was held in late August with inclusion experts from CBRE. The action plan for 2019-2020 are:
  • Educate: Host Unconscious Bias event for board and committee members. Help us identify unconscious barriers to inclusion. (targeted for Fall 2019)
  • Partner:   Apply D&I lens to all FEI programming and events. IDEA committee members participate on each FEI Chicago committee.
  • Prioritize Member Experience: Create opportunities for lasting connections - Develop events based on member interests and other ways to connect, tailored to member interest and location (downtown and suburbs).
  • Measure Results: Measure Net Membership growth (decline) & event attendance.
As IDEA committee members are embedded in each of the FEI Chicago Chapter committees, diversity and inclusion is no longer a standalone activity, but an integral part of the mission of the FEI Chicago Chapter. Ultimately, each FEI Chicago member should take ownership of the mission of IDEA as you think about members for our Chapter. Please reach out to Sharada or any of the IDEA committee members if you have any questions or ideas for programming and/or events that you have.

CMG CAREER MANAGEMENT GROUP

Vince DiRaddo
CMG Chair
As we reflect back on recent Career Management Group meetings, we are encouraged by the increase of attendees this year. The new year started strong with JD Gershbein, one of the world's top LinkedIn strategists facilitating a discussion on LinkedIn in a Town Hall format. This unique format permitted open engagement between FEI Members/Guests/Sponsors. In September, 44 attendees came out to hear Roger Lump talk about the GIG Economy. This was the largest number of attendees in the past 15 months, allowing all to reconnect with old friends, as well as make new connections. Last month, Kim Svoboda conducted a workshop on "5 Powerful Ways to Boost Your Executive Presence."

In September, Roger Lump gave an overview of the broader Gig Economy, including current trends for the professional segment and how it translates into the finance function. He highlighted the Pros and Cons of work in the Professional Gig Economy based on proprietary and industry research while sharing select stories and observations from hundreds of engagements and candidate interviews in the Chicago market. Roger helped attendees understand how to approach the Professional Gig space versus full time employment and left them with a framework for accelerating their Professional Gig career. Click here to watch Roger's presentation.

Kim Svoboda, presided over a fun, engaging and valuable workshop on how to develop improved skills in communication, understanding gravitas and how to grow and present an image of clarity and confidence. This workshop format enabled FEI members to not only engage with the speaker but to also interact with each other. Through the workshop the attendees: 1) Discovered the super power that is the key to Executive Presence; 2) Gained valuable insights on how to position themselves for the job you want next 3) Unlocked the code on your behavior and put your best foot forward 4) Learned how to fit in......when you think you don't and 5) How to turn your mindset into your key differentiator. Click here to watch Kim's presentation.
