Dancing with Nature

September 2018 Issue 9 Vol 8
News, Life and the Art Culture in the Smoky Mountains

We have a hornets' nest outside the gallery window that is constantly bouncing around because the head hornet decided to build the nest right above our air conditioner fan which blows full tilt all day. Despite the incessant jostling, the insects have been persistent and determined to make this house work.  It is like nature's way of showing mankind that overcoming adversities is possible with some teamwork and resoluteness.

As I compose this newsletter greeting, the east coast had been watching for days in great anticipation as Hurricane Florence tip toed toward North Carolina. Finally impacting our NC state family, she squatted and dumped incredible amounts of water obliterating beaches, businesses, homes and vast acres of farmland far into the state. The destruction continues to this day as the rivers continue to rise though Florence has long since traveled north. Western North Carolina "dodged a bullet" with only a full day of rain barely enough to cause a disruption in business; nothing remotely close to what the rest of the state experienced.

With this is a reminder, now more than ever, to support small businesses and independent artists that are incredibly impacted by these acts of nature. The storm aftermath already creates a heightened stress level and the added loss of revenue just creates another inner storm. Your support is their hope of weathering the storm and traveling down the road of recovery.

Who's ready for fall y'all? WE are!!! We are kicking October off with a 20th anniversary celebration during Art After Dark. Kaaren Stoner, gallery creator, will be demonstrating that evening as we have a special evening in the works. A percentage of the sales during AAD will go toward Hurricane Florence recovery.  Next in line is Church Street Art and Craft Show followed by the Apple Harvest Festival. We will be winding up the month with Halloween's Treats on the Street. And for icing on the cake, let's just hope for a brilliant, leaf showing.

For my downtown moving around update .... Hunter Banks Fly Fishing Store has left but is being quickly replaced with Richard Baker's Studio (landscape painter). Also coming downtown, WATAMI Sushi and Noodle Restaurant. Looking for downtown living?  Upper story units coming soon as well as a new coffee shop. Come see for yourself!

Every now and then life throws you a hurricane. But mankind is resilient and will once again rise up stronger and more mindful. To all those affected one way or another by Florence we stand beside you offering support to ride out this storm and let the healing begin.

Walking in beauty ~

Kaaren has continued to display her nature inspired work as a permanent artist.

Friday evening, as you stroll through the gallery's 140+ primarily regional artists, enjoy piano music by Erich Overhultz and delight in the savory hors d'eurves.

Peggy Epton

My medium is fabric and thread. Rich colors, fine details, and visual depth are hallmarks of my work. From a distance, viewers often mistake my creations as a painting, but with close examination they observe layers of fabric and intricate stitching. Every handcrafted bag and framed fiber piece is original in design and a one of a kind keepsake.

Fabric is my canvas as I "paint" with thread. I guide the fabric under a moving needle. This technique of free motion quilting allows me to sew in any direction and "sketch" complex details onto the surface of the quilt. No patterns programmed stitches, or pencil marks are applied-even cutting is done free hand! Most of my bags and small "art quilts" are embellished with hand embroidery, bead-work, or paint.

The inspiration for my work lies in the natural world surrounding us...from the warmth of the sea to the changing mountain ranges outside my very first studio window.

My handcrafted bags have been described as a cherished piece of wearable art. Clients have reported that my fiber pieces are not only representational in nature, but also found a special place in their home!

It is my hope that you find a sense of peace within the study of my work.
