Last week, my wife, daughter, and I took our now COVID-inspired Saturday bike ride to visit friends who also have adult children with developmental disabilities. Though this is not the time of year for a bike ride in Georgia - 90+ degrees with humidity to match - this routine has become an important part of our week. At one stop, the mother said she had an awful epiphany during the week. Up until then, she had been thinking about all the things that would return to normal when we were past the double pandemic.

Deadline to apply for open positions is August 31, 2020
The good work of ACPE is accomplished by dedicated volunteers who give their time, energy, passion, and talent to the important work of the organization. The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) is committed to continuing to build a strong, diverse leadership structure in the organization. | Quarterly Accreditation Billing |
Due to the implementation of ACPE's new database, the quarterly billing for accreditation fees for the second quarter (4/1/2020 to 6/30/2020) was delayed. Second quarter accreditation fee invoices should be sent this week. Third quarter billing will resume as regularly scheduled in October.

The goal of the project is to strengthen chaplaincy degree programs at schools across the country. Beginning with the redesign of courses within theological schools, we can start to think on a pedagogical level about transforming the ways in which chaplains are trained and spiritual care is provided.
If you are a theological educator teaching a course on chaplaincy and/or spiritual care, you are invited to join the project!
- The deadline to apply is September 1, 2020.
- Participating educators will receive a stipend to support their work.

We will continue to offer one meeting time each week for both Educators and Psychotherapists. Please drop in as you are able; no registration is required. Perhaps it is a bit early, but this poem by WS Merwin anticipates the end of summer. In most years, there is a kind of melancholy that accompanies summer's end. This year is so different in so many ways that the feelings are likely to be more complex. Because a walk outside has been an important part of COVID-19 coping for many, this poem may invite some reflection on those feelings and perhaps even spark some gratitude:

this whisper in the tawny grass this feather floating
in the air this house of half a life or so
this blue door open to the lingering sun this stillness
echoing from the rooms like an unfinished sound

There are few things that smell like a woodshed. The scent of fresh-cut wood has a primal quality to it, something that helps us get in touch with the basic need to create. Wood shops can also be dangerous places for those who don't know how the tools work or how to practice safely. But some stories bring new depth to such spaces. Check out this video of John Furniss, a gifted woodworker who lost his sight when he was a teenager. Another great example of gratitude:

My CPE experience has been life-changing, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Unbeknownst to me, I never thought my CPE residency was destined to cross paths with this unprecedented pandemic. However, I feel peaceful, content and believe that my ministry has made a difference at Christus Health. With God's help, I have been able to stay focused on my ministry and calling, not crippled by fear or panic due to this invisible enemy. CPE has surpassed my expectations in all areas of ministry, especially during this critical time.

Feast day Asmá' (Baha'i)
The Baha'i calendar has nineteen months, all named after attributes of God. Asma is the Arabic word for names. The word "feast" suggests that a large meal will be served, but that is not necessary for a Bahá'í Feast. The use of the term "feast," in this case, means that the community should enjoy a "spiritual feast" of worship, fellowship and unity - although refreshments are usually available.

Muharram (Islam)
The month of Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic liturgical year. This first day, al-Hijra, remembers the migration of Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. It also marks the beginning of the ten-day Shīʿite Remembrance of Muharram, a period of intense grief and martyrdom of Hussein, the son of Ali and grandson of Muhammad.

Ganesh Chaturthi (Hinduism)
This day is celebrated as the birthday of Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati. Known as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and success, Ganesha bestows his presence on earth during this time. In some traditions, clay figures of Ganesha are made and worshiped for a period of two to ten days, then are thrown into the river as ritual departure back to Kailash, the sacred mountain on which he lives.
August 23
Samvatsari (Jainism)
The last day of Paryushana is called Samvatsari, or the International Day of Forgiveness. Jains spend this day in prayer and contemplation, and seek forgiveness from friends, relatives and others whom they may have harmed or offended in any way.
