SCAN Spotlight: Sara Marcus leads BYP
Sara Marcus has been a vital part of the Board of Young Professionals since she joined three years ago. Her leadership, kindness, hard work and passion for the families and children in our community make such a difference for all those touched by SCAN. We are thankful for Sara and excited for this year with her serving as President of the Board of Young Professionals.

What inspires you to stay involved with your work at SCAN?
After moving to Richmond, I immediately felt a deep connection to the community. In a city of Richmond’s size, everyone is so linked. We all want children in our community to grow up in healthy, happy family environments and to have the opportunity to heal and recover when children and families suffer traumatic events. SCAN provides this opportunity to families and children across our region.

I’ve also been inspired to stay involved with the BYP because it is such an energetic and passionate group. Hearing stories from staff about the lives SCAN touches is so impactful. As the incoming BYP President, I was able to help interview new member for this year. Hearing all the stories about how people learned about SCAN and became interested in the BYP was inspiring. From former CASA volunteers to people who have been to our events to neighbors who walk by the SCAN office everyone has a unique story.

SCAN Hosts Statewide TICN Meeting
On September 17, SCAN convened leaders from Trauma Informed Community Networks across the state. It was incredible to learn from each other, hear about resilience and trauma-informed efforts across Virginia, and to work with  Voices for Virginia's Children  as they form a unified trauma-informed policy agenda. Thank you to all the partners who have joined these efforts to build a trauma-informed VA! A special thank you to Family and Children's Trust Fund of Virginia , The Community Foundation , and Bon Secours for funding the efforts of the Greater Richmond TICN.

Family Support Program Reaches At-Risk Parents
SCAN's Family Support Program provides treatment and education groups to empower caregivers with the tools they need to nurture and protect their children. Each parent completes an exit survey at the completion of group.
  • Last year, 91% of parents shared that they achieved their personal goals in group. Examples include:
  • to be a better mother and take responsibility for my actions
  • to improve my parenting ability and become closer with my child.
  • learn to discipline my child without abuse
  • to never neglect my kids again
  • to get my life back on track

  • 92% of parents have an understanding of how they were raised and how early life experience impact their parenting. Examples of how parents now nurture their children include:
  • showing attention, love and support
  • saying I love you no matter what
  • help understand when they are easily frustrated
  • keep child safe
