Weekly BobBlast Issue 320
Brown. My Second Choice…

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Now, don't get me wrong… Even though the color BROWN is not my first color choice, I do like some of the browns that are right out of the tube such as Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber and Sepia for the richness. However, I still find that I seldom get the color Brown to work in my "Four Color" paintings because brown is not on my Goof-Proof Color Wheel.

So, I spent a lot of time creating the "illusion of Brown" by mixing complementary colors (resulting in neutrals) with my other colors. Look at the photo of the tree trunks - I found by mimicking the French Impressionists' usage of short, choppy strokes of clean colors - I could create the illusion of "brown."

Spots of Blacks, Reds, Orange and Blue appear as the color Brown when viewed from a distance. Think Georges Seurat and now, Chuck Close: Small dots of color appear as one color. This is known as optical mixing, as opposed to mechanical mixing which is mixing your paint on the palette. This has always fascinated me. I remember the early days of color television, which was only three dots of color up close. Just then I became a student of painting.

Another way I practice with browns - Monochromatic painting with Lamp Black, White and Marigold (Indian Yellow, transparent). The end result has a Rembrandt effect. Side note: The artists at that time did not have the array of colors we enjoy today.

So in summary… any two opposite colors on the Standard Color Wheel - and also my Goof-Proof Color Wheel - will make a brownish neutral. However - l am going to talk out of the other side of my mouth and refer to my favorite out-of-the-tube, brilliant, pure color saturated browns: Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber and Sepia are the richest and deepest of the pure browns you can buy at the art store.

Hope this BobBlast clears up some of your questions on how and why I make browns and neutrals work for me. If you want more info - I am teaching a 2-day, 8 hour Zoom Workshop on Neutrals, September 28 and 29. Click here for details.

Brown… No wonder it's confusing - It's not on your Color Wheel!
