Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. GCA Faculty and Alumni Honored by AIA Oklahoma

Join us in congratulating the OU faculty and alumna who were recently selected to receive American Institute of Architects (AIA) Oklahoma Honor Awards! The awards will be formally presented at the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture on Nov. 9.
  • Urban Design Director Shawn Schaefer won the 2018 AIA Oklahoma Community Service Award
  • Architecture Professor Marjorie Callahan won the 2018 AIA Oklahoma Outstanding Educational Contributions Award
  • Alumna Beth Windel of SDG Architects was recognized with the 2018 AIA Oklahoma Young Professional Achievement Award

GCA Landscape Architecture Professor Publishes Research in Children, Youth and Environments

In a recent article published in Children, Youth and Environments, Dr. Sarah Little, GCA professor of landscape architecture, and colleagues Adina Cox (University of Kentucky) and Janet Lobach (Centre for Addication and Mental Health in London, Canada) propose a behavior mapping tool for understanding nature play behaviors.

The authors write that, "When children engage with the natural world, they experience myriad benefits to their health and well-being."  They continue, "Play in outdoor and natural environments is critical for children's healthy social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development. Developing high-quality, engaging natural play spaces may be one strategy to afford children greater access to the outdoors and nature-based play. "

Urban Design Studio Alumna on Team Recognized with APA Oklahoma "Great Public Space" Award

The American Planning Association - Oklahoma Chapter (APA Oklahoma) recently announced the winners of the 2018 Planning Awards Program. Among the projects recognized is the Charley Young Park in Bixby, Oklahoma. The park was recognized with the 2018 Great Public Space award in at the 2018 Annual State Planning Conference in Midwest City, Oklahoma on October 1, 2019.

O U Urban Design Studio alumna Marcae' Hilton is the Planning Director for the City of Bixby and helped the Charley Young Park. The park is within the heart of downtown Bixby and has roots dating back to the 1920s. The redesign of this historic park included the addition of pedestrian and bike facilities, street-scaping on the park's perimeters, wayfinding signage and increased landscaping.

GCA Professor to Offer Humanities Forum Seminar on "Architecture, Space and Time"

2018-2019 Humanities Forum Fellow and professor of architecture Deborah Richards will lead a seminar on Thurs., Nov. 1. Her seminar will explore "how a surface condition in architecture can be generated and understood through philosophical framings in three different ways: surface can be generated as a continuous field, the crust of an object, or as a narrative."

Alumni Lecture: "From Norman to the World: An Unconventional Path"

Even during at OU, while earning his BArch (class of '88), Bruce has never taken a conventional path. His career has taken him from the plains of Oklahoma to the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan to the hallways of the State Department and Capitol Hill. Bruce currently serves as Vice President and Director of International Projects for Mason & Hanger, one of the oldest architecture and engineering firms in the country. Bruce has traveled to over 56 countries and worked on projects in 34 countries with combined construction values exceeding $12 billion. Come and hear about his unconventional journey.

Cash Prizes! Enter the GCA's Fifth Annual Napkin Sketch Contest!

The 2019 Napkin Contest is now accepting entrees! This annual contest offers CASH PRIZES and is open to all students in the GCA. To get started, pick up your free napkins from Camille Germany, in Gould Hall, rm. 282. The deadline is Monday, December 3rd, 2018. Winners will be announced in February, during the Charles W. Graham Travel Study Dinner Benefit. Study Abroad in Italy with "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program

Students who participate in the Summer 2019 "Gardens of Knowledge and Delight" Program are invited to walk the historic botanical gardens of Italy, and learn the foundations of natural history and science with Bruce Hoagland, biogeographer. They will also experience splendid Renaissance villa gardens with Tom Woodfin, landscape architect and garden historian. Together, they will learn the history of beloved places whose beauty, plant collections, and structure continue to inspire scientists and artists

  • The class is based in Arezzo, Italy, and runs from July 8 - August 2, 2019
  • Students can earn six credit hours in two courses: GEOG 3253, Environmental Conservation, and LA 4743, Garden History

Gould Hall's Charles W. Graham Cafe Announces Fall 2018 Hours

The Charles W. Graham Cafe is now open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is located in the northwest corner of the Gould Hall basement, near the computer lab.
