MONDAY MEMO
7th graders Izzy, Jeronimo, Camryn, Bryn, and Annie joined Cora and the rest of the preschool for music class last week. Together they were listening for the music to change in Fairies & Giants by Edward Elgar, so they could dance like accordingly, which one do you think they're doing in this photo?
Greetings!

Today begins the last week before April vacation, and a few relaxed COVID guidelines at school, read more about those below.
Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
GROW RIVERSIDE OUTSIDE
We are so proud of Riverside teachers finding inspiration in this pandemic, and thrilled with the idea of honoring all those who've taught on this campus with a pavilion for outdoor learning and community events. Please join trustees, teachers, alumni, and alumni parents and make a donation online or by check.

The Board of Trustees will be hosting a social event, Stewarding Riverside Outside, in mid May, date TBA. Instead of our usual Oktoberfest friend-raiser, we hope you'll come enjoy a guided walk through some of the newly explored and used parts of the edge of our campus, with food- and drink-tasting stations along the way! We think this will be a really fun and safe way to have our adult community gather, socialize, celebrate, and support our GRO efforts together!
INSTEAD OF OUR ANNUAL AUCTION: A SUPER CASH RAFFLE
Instead of our usual parent-led auction, which typically raises more than $15,000 for Riverside's programs in February, parents have planned a Super Cash Raffle! Each family will get three tickets to sell, which are going home today, along with this letter to parents that explains the event in detail. Please return tickets by May 3rd, for a drawing event on May 22nd.
SPIRIT WEEK
Student Council has planned this year's spirit week, it's been so fun to be together in pajamas today! For the rest of the week:
  • Tuesday - twin day, pick a friend and dress alike
  • Wednesday - wacky day
  • Thursday - each class has a theme day
  • Friday - Riverside Day, wear green and blue
TICKS
'Tis the season for tick checks! Please help your child(ren) check their bodies for these little springtime crawlers and dispose of them carefully. If we find a tick embedded in the skin at school, we will remove it and attach it to a paper with the time and location of the bite, in case any symptoms develop.
FRIDAY, APRIL 16
This Friday is the last day before Spring Vacation, so will be our Festival of Poetry and Prose, and an early dismissal at 12:30.

We will begin the day with the same writing prompt for the whole school, a "Harris Burdick" image by Chris van Allbsurg, a traditional favorite. Throughout the rest of the morning students will be rotating through outdoor activities, led by 8th graders, that engage them in different aspects of creative writing. At the end of the morning we hope to gather in larger groups to share some pieces aloud.

After school and Extended Day Programs will run from dismissal until 4:15 (PreK) and 5:00 (K-8). Please email Sarah or Sean specifically if your child(ren) will attend, so they can plan the long afternoon accordingly.
STANDARDIZED TESTING
Our 3-8th grade students have been working hard to keep focus and effort high, and show what they know and what they don't know. We are wrapping up testing this week for almost all students. Those who've been absent or remote for multiple days will need to coordinate times for testing during class or after school with Nelia.
  • 3rd Grade: second math test and extra time Tuesday morning
  • 4th Grade: first and second ELA tests and extra time, Monday-Thursday mornings
  • 5th Grade: second math test Monday morning and extra time TBD
  • 6th Grade: second math test and extra time Wednesday morning
  • 7th Grade: second math test and extra time Monday morning
  • 8th Grade: second math test Tuesday morning
COVID GUIDELINE UPDATES
  • Morning Temperature Checks: We are no longer required to take temperatures in the morning so long as families can affirm that they have checked temperatures before bringing their children to campus. We will continue to check between now and April vacation, but after April vacation, we will not be checking at carline any more. Teachers will instead have thermometers in their classrooms for children whose parents don’t have one at home or in their car.
  • Travel: The governor spoke last week about Vermont’s reopening plans. A lot of what he talked about were plans for upcoming months, but the salient piece of information for us all right now is that “quarantine is not required for unvaccinated visitors to the state so long as they have a negative test within 3 days prior to arrival. Unvaccinated Vermonters (which includes all of our students) must be tested within 3 days upon return to the state.” Our understanding is that if you or your child leaves the state for non-essential reasons, you do not have to quarantine, but do need a negative test three days after returning. We are asking that if you are unvaccinated and you or your children travel by plane or are in any risky situations while traveling (over April Break, for example) that your child learns remotely until the negative test result comes in.
  • Spacing and Pods: We are now allowed to space all students at 3’ (except when they are eating) and no longer have to keep pods separate. In practice, this means we will be able to be a little more flexible about group-work settings for 7th and 8th-graders, and will be able to resume large assemblies and clean-up teams led by 8th graders. We won’t otherwise substantially change any of the seating or grouping arrangements because we are happy with our current safety protocols.
SQUARE 1 ART FUNDRAISER
With so much participation, we reached the highest fundraising level of earning 30% of the sales for Riverside! Thank you for helping raise more than $1400 to support us in developing active learners, patient leaders, and engaged citizens in this amazingly supportive community! Products will arrive by the end of April. If you have any feedback or suggestions for future Square 1 fundraisers, please email Nicki Reimert.
YARD SALE UPDATE
Riverside's Annual Yard Sale will be May 1, 2021 9am-4pm!

Donation Drop Off:
Please plan to drop off all donations before 3:00 pm on Friday, April 16. You'll note that there are some signs with yellow stars that help us pre-sort some items in advance, which saves our volunteers a lot of time. Unsorted donations can be dropped off at the front of the large tent under the 1st Grade classroom windows. Please, do not donate electronics, VHS and cassettes, particle board furniture, encyclopedias and magazines, outdated baby gear, or car seats. Items should be in usable condition. If possible, we'd ask that you save furniture donations for after we return from Spring Break, when we have more tents up and we have more space to safely store them for the sale.
Volunteers, we NEED you!
Thank you to the families who came to school on Sunday to help set up our donation tents, we are really glad to have them housing everything this week! We still have shifts for setting up the event on Friday, April 30 that need to be filled. Family participation is critical for the success of this fun community-building event. Volunteers who help with presorting and set-up can take advantage of the pre-event sale, available only to volunteers. We thank you in advance for lending us a few of your hours. Sign up HERE

Questions
If you have ANY questions about what to donate and when to drop off, you can contact Arcelie Reyes (preschooler Cassius, 3rd grader Phoenix, 6th grader Kingston) or Fiona Shackleton (8th grader Trixie).
WISH LIST
The 5th grade would like to borrow:
  • a hand post hole digger or two
  • and a 5' long iron bar
They are going to be installing kiosk signs for learning opportunities on our campus, as part of our GRO efforts. Please email Hanna to coordinate if you have one of these tools.
2021-2022 CALENDAR
Here is the school calendar as we've planned it for next year. Enjoy!
TAP INTO FILM SLAM
Catamount Arts has opened registration for SOCAPA’s eagerly anticipated annual film slam. SOCAPA’s Tap Into Film 72-Hour Family Film Slam, scheduled for the weekend of April 22-25, invites both novice and experienced filmmakers alike to write, shoot, and edit a short movie, from initial concept to final cut, in a single weekend. Learn more here, and register your family as a team here.

"Recognizing a genuine, urgent need for collaboration, expression, and fun, SOCAPA and Catamount Arts opted last year not to cancel the popular annual film slam, but to offer it entirely online, open admission to participants worldwide, and challenge teams to promote public safety by working exclusively within their own households. A record-breaking 77 teams participated in the event, with over 2000 votes for Audience Favorite, and the competition’s biggest challenge—quarantined filmmakers forced to work exclusively with their own family members—led to surprisingly moving and often hilarious results as multi-generational teams competed for the first time in event history." (Caledonian Record) Numerous Riverside families participated. The event will use the same format this year.
