Sure Signs of Spring...Snowdrops and Announcement of Annual Garden Tour!
Two harbingers of spring have arrived!
Our lovely snowdrops have popped out their sweet heads here at the Cushing House. These bell-shaped white blooms on the southeast side of the building are notorious for their early arrival. Snowdrops are tough little flowers than can weather any snow or rain the winter still has in store for us, and they are a sure sign that the Garden Tour is just around the corner!
Save the dates: Annual Garden Tour, Saturday & Sunday, June 13 & 14, 2020!
The Museum of Old Newbury has secured 12 forward-looking gardens that will explore four interesting trends. "The Many Faces of Gardening" will feature local plants at the Native Planting & Pollinator sites; composting options for gardens that “Waste Not, Want Not;” show-stopping outdoor spaces in the “Backyard Retreats” spots; and vegetable gardens that truly take you from “Garden to Table.”
Sherry Evans,
chair of the 141st Annual Garden Tour, The Many Faces of Gardening, shares, "Rain or shine, the Museum of Old Newburyport Garden Tour is an inspiration for those ranging from professionals seriously interested in garden design and horticulture, to voyeurs who simply love beautiful gardens. In the variety found for this year’s tour, we feel that there is something that will please everyone. We hope you will join us for these special June days."
The days will also feature our Annual Plant Sale and other surprises. Please consider volunteering your time or cuttings from your garden (for the plant sale).

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: If you have the Time, We have the Need
What makes volunteering a meaningful, worthwhile endeavor? Is it contributing and giving back to the community? Sharing experience and expertise with others or learning a new skill? Or maybe it’s meeting some new people who have a shared interest and similar outlook. The Museum of Old Newbury checks all these boxes and more and is currently seeking volunteers to help meet the challenge of a busy, productive and fun 2020 season.
Susan C.S. Edwards,
executive director for the Museum of Old Newbury, explains, "No specific experience is required, just a team-player mentality with a positive attitude and a willingness to get involved. Several areas of opportunity are available including a need for docents, event and program volunteering, assisting with the museum collections and even a few ‘green thumbs’ to assist in the garden would be terrific."
Docents, the folks who give tours of the museum, are a particularly important part of the museum. Ideal volunteers for this opportunity are those who enjoy sharing their knowledge with others and speaking to small groups. Training and support are provided to new docents so that learning about the history of the Newburys is a snap.
For more information about the museum or other opportunities available, please call 978.462.2681. The Museum of Old Newbury houses an extraordinary collection of decorative arts, silver, costumes, fine art and more. We hope you’ll considering joining us in preserving and promoting our local history for generations to come.
