Canada Day at Rennie Park 2018

Enjoy free Canada Day fun

Celebrate Canada Day with live entertainment, family activities and cupcakes Sunday, July 1 at Rennie Park.
 
Festivities begin with Tim Holland, the Puppet Tamer, from noon to 12:30 p.m. The White Pine Dancers perform from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. The Montebellos take the stage from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. followed by Rosevelt from 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. The Athertones perform from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
 
Canada Day in Rennie Park also includes a midway with bouncers, games, crafts, buskers and more. 
 
Free parking is available at City parking lots and on-street meters within walking distance of Rennie Park. Revellers can also park at Ontario Jaycee Gardens Park, 543 Ontario St., and access Rennie Park via the pedestrian bridge.

Canada Day at the St. Catharines Museum

The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre celebrates the Niagara-Canadian Mosaic with live cultural performances, carnival games and out-of-the-vault exhibits from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
 
Catch live folk music from Vox Violins between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Niagara Multi-Folk-Arts Song and Dance Ensemble performs at 11 a.m. and the Latin Immigrant Niagara Community Association performs at
2 p.m. Pack a lunch to enjoy on the museum grounds.
 
The museum will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Some City facilities closed July 2

City Hall, the Parks, Recreation and Culture Services administration office and some other City facilities will be closed Monday, July 2 to observe the Canada Day holiday.

City pools open this Saturday
 
The City's outdoor pools open for the season on Saturday, June 30. The St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre also reopens June 30 after scheduled maintenance and will offer additional leisure swims from 9 a.m. to noon. 
 
In celebration of Canada Day, residents can enjoy free leisure swims at any City pool on July 1.
 
City splash pads open
 
The City's inclusive splash pads at Lester B. Pearson Park, Catherine Street Park, West Park and Bogart Street Park are open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free.
 
Mayor Walter Sendzik and members of City Council will celebrate the new Bogart Street Park Splash Pad Tuesday, July 3 at noon. All are welcome.

Music and dancing at Montebello Park
 
Bring your lawn chair and dancing shoes to Montebello Park for free live music on Sunday and Wednesday nights this summer.

Summer Concerts in the Park
Elton Lammie kicks off the City's free Summer Concert in the Park series with country night on Wednesday, July 4 at 6 p.m. The concerts at Montebello Park run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. rain or shine in July.

Dancing in the Park
The City of St. Catharines kicks off Dancing in the Park with a free concert by the Jimmy Marando Swing Band on Sunday, July 15. The free events at Montebello Park run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. rain or shine and continue throughout July and August.

Helpa re-name Cushman Road Park
 
Five finalists for a new name
for Cushman Road Park
 
Bridgeview Park, Carlton Crossing Park, Grant Park, Lock Two Park or Meredith Park - one of these will become the new name for Cushman Road Park.

Residents can rank the proposed names by visiting www.stcatharines.ca/ParkName.

Feedback must be received by July 9. A new name for Cushman Road Park will go to City Council for consideration in August.

'Un-bear-able' fun set for Morningstar Mill July 8
         
Calling all teddy bear owners - you and your cuddly friend are invited to the Morningstar Mill for a Teddy Bear Picnic.
 
Head to the mill Sunday, July 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a day of fun, history and furry friends. The picnic is perfect for children aged four to nine and will include crafts, games, lunch and more. Visitors will also enjoy an inside look of the Morningstar mill and homestead.

Admission is $10 per child and advance registration is required.

Council Highlights
City, native centre sign agreement to work together

City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Niagara Regional Native Centre and directed staff to continue to work with the Niagara Regional Native Centre on the consultation and engagement initiatives identified in the agreement.
City council wants Lorne Street regraded

City Council directed staff to regrade Lorne Street from Arlington Avenue to Queenston Street and to include the following reconstruction:
  • curbs be made into full curbs
     
  • street widened where feasible
     
  • appropriate rehabilitation works be undertaken to ensure residents' properties are returned to acceptable conditions

City Council directed staff to hold an open house before any construction to fully explain proposed changes to residents. City Council also wants a review of City policies and standards for sidewalks and curbs.

City council supports retaliatory tariffs

City Council supported the Government of Canada's decision to impose retaliatory tariffs on United States imports effective July 1 and endorsed the Niagara Region's motion in support of the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario's efforts concerning trade with the United States.
Other business

Downtown parking
City Council referred the Downtown Parking Study back to staff for more public consultation and directed staff to report back. No fees will be increased in 2019.

Restricted acts after Nomination Day
City Council delegated authority to the City's Chief Administrative Officer should a 'lame duck period' be triggered for the following:
  • for disposing of properties with a value of more than $50,000
     
  • for expenditures or any other liability exceeding $50,000, unless the liability was included in a budget adoption by City Council before July 27
City Council also directed any expenditures of more than $50,000 not approved in the City budget be reviewed by the City Treasurer and that the CAO prepare a report outlining any / all expenditures that are approved between now and Dec. 1.

Niagara Compliance Audit Committee
City Council approved re-establishing the Joint Niagara Compliance Audit Committee and approved the updated terms of reference for the committee.

45 Dorchester Blvd.
City Council approved a planning application for a 49-unit townhouse development at 45 Dorchester Blvd.

77 Yates St.
City Council authorized an agreement with the owners of 77 Yates St. to permit the encroachment of 16 helical piles a maximum of 14.3 metres under Yates Street.
 
116 Glenridge Ave.
City Council received an information report regarding a planning application at 116 Glenridge Ave. filed by the property owner, St. George and St. Mercurius Coptic Orthodox Church, to expand its facility and will consider a recommendation report at a future meeting.

50 Gale Cr.
City Council approved a planning application to allow a proposed six-storey mixed-use building with ground floor commercial space and 35 apartment dwelling units that also may contain home-based business spaces at 50 Gale Cr.

24 Grapeview Dr.
City Council approved a planning application to allow construction of two semi-detached dwelling units and 14 townhouse dwellings at 24 Grapeview Dr.

Rates and Fees
City Council approved the City's rates and fees for 2019.
