Happy World Wildlife Day!
|
World Wildlife Day is recognized on March 3 each year to celebrate all of the different plants and wild animals on Earth, raise awareness of the importance of conservation, highlight threatened or endangered species, and connect individuals to action to do their part to protect wildlife.
|
Celebrating World Wildlife Day on the Detroit River
This past field season, US Fish and Wildlife Department Services native species crew set a new record of 115 Lake Sturgeon captured in the Detroit River! It was also the first year they have caught over 100 sturgeon in the river.

We're interested in knowing what fish people catch and eat from the Detroit River. Your input will provide valuable information to Detroit River Canadian Cleanup (DRCC) staff to help guide future research, education and outreach, monitoring and remediation efforts in the Detroit River and its watershed.
Participants will receive a $5 Tim Horton's gift card (while supplies last) for their time.

ERCA's annual Earth Day Contest is happening again this year!
Tell us how you are taking action on climate change.
Students can submit illustrations, essays, poems or photos.
Students must currently be enrolled in school or be home-schooled in the Windsor-Essex Region.
Entries can be submitted digitally by email to [email protected] with the subject heading 'Earth Day Contest' or via mail.

Each year the Friends of the Detroit River host Shiver on the River at Belle Isle Park. Shiver on the River is a family event designed to educate local citizens about the significance of the Detroit River, while promoting effective stewardship of the River and its surrounding ecosystems.
Guests were treated to ice rescue demonstrations, a coast guard fly by, caricatures, and magic show presentations while exploring the Belle Isle Casino, Belle Isle Aquarium, the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory, and the Belle Isle Nature Zoo.
Fellow environmental organizations like The Sierra Club, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Sea Grant presented wonderful information displays and activities that encouraged visitors to learn more about how important and special the Detroit River is.

The province of Ontario is looking for your input on:
Invasive Species Act: The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry is seeking public feedback on preventing the spread of invasive species in Ontario. Provide your comments by March 30 here!
They are currently seeking information on the ecological, social and economic impacts and benefits of 13 species and one carrier. This information will support:
- the completion of ecological risk assessments
- the possible development of a future regulatory proposal under the Invasive Species Act, 2015
Ontario Conservation Authorities: The province is reviewing the Conservation Authorities Act to define the core mandate of conservation authorities and their programs and services. Your feedback will help them improve the overall governance, oversight and accountability of conservation authorities to protect and preserve Ontario's natural spaces. Provide your input
here by March 13.

On April 25, thousands will come together to be a part of the largest volunteer event in history is coming to the Detroit River and you can be a part of it!
