What's happening

The First Annual Art Show on Friday May 3rd was a  huge success!  Thank you to all that came to view it!  The kids were all so proud seeing their Works of Art all on display.  Art pieces on display ranged from oil pastels, chalk pastels, paper mache sculptures, collages, mixed media art from the Fine Arts Club, books from book binding, wire sculptures, The Safe Home Projects and assorted crafts and activities produced from the Art Room this past school year.  Thank you to all the Club members who served as tour guides for the Art Show.  They did a fabulous job! Please see the pictures below!

Drama Matters is still hard at work preparing for the play - The Day the Crayon Quit.  There are still a few more set design details being made and rehearsals to perfect the show.  The play is Friday May 17th at 5PM in the Canteen.  It is free to members and their families to come and enjoy.  You will be delighted and amazed with the production!

The members have the opportunity to make Mother's Day gifts and cards this week for special Mom's, Grandmother's, Aunts and special friends or relatives.   The members will be able to package up their gifts in beautiful wrappings and ribbons too!

Even though there are only 5 weeks left of the NBGC school year programming, the members will still have plenty of opportunities to create and enjoy activities within the Art Programming.  The members can look forward to more sewing projects, painting, nature art, sculpting and field trip sketching.

In the Computer Lab, members have been working on MyFuture doing Hour of Code and typing practice on typingclub.com or nitrotype. They have also been doing Prodigy, which has them complete math problems to gain stars. Another popular activity has been PHET Colorado simulations which include circuit building, learning about light properties, and doing fractions.

There has also been 1st grade time in the Computer Lab. Torch Club members have been helping out and showing the other club kids how to use the computer. Our older members are enjoying virtual reality time on Fridays.

Photo Club has been going great! Many Photo Club members displayed their photography at the Art Show.  All the members part of the club are  have improved immensely throughout the year.  Members have been working on different types of photography, such as landscape and portraits.

On Wednesday, members took a trip to Brant Point to display some of their photos on a bulletin board. Photo Cub continues to go on numerous field trips around the island, exploring new places, and finding new ways to capture great photos.

Are you concerned about your child's reading, or would you like to see them receive more reading instruction? You should encourage them to join BookNook!

BookNook is a fun, web-based reading app that tests your members reading level and selects short books and vocabulary words for them, based on that reading level. The lessons mix games and interactive questions with the reading and adapt in difficulty as your child learns, teaching them different reading standards as they progress towards the next reading level. BookNook sessions usually last about 20-30 minutes and take place in the Learning Center from 4:00-5:45 on Mondays and Wednesdays and from 4:00-5:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Whether your child is a struggling reader who could use some help catching up to their grade level, a strong reader who would like to improve, or somewhere in between, BookNook can help! If you're interested in signing up your member or finding out more about the program, please visit Danny in the Learning Center or send an email to danny@nantucketboysandgirlsclub.org

The Power Hour Homework Club has been busy, as always! Over 40 kids a day come into the Learning Center to do their homework and over 150 different members have come in to do homework so far this year. Members who sign a Power Hour contract and attend Power Hour enough times are invited to a Power Hour Party! Power Hour is held Monday through Thursday from 2:30-4:00 and our next Power Hour Party will be held on May 31st.

LEGO Robotics is running on Thursdays from 5:00-5:45 for the rest of the 2018-2019 school year! We are looking to add new members to our team, and will be having relaxed sessions where both experienced and inexperienced kids can come to learn and practice their Robot Programming skills. Our LEGO Robotics team has traveled to Worcester each of the past 3 years to participate in the F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League competition! Members in third grade and above are invited to stop in to the Learning Center and try it out!

The Teen Room is busy with members participating in monthly tournament and this month is carpetball! The teens have been baking delicious treats in the kitchen! This month they will be making fried plantains, chocolate raspberry tarts, and Irish soda bread. Teen Nights continue to stay busy. Members enjoy manhunt field trips, soccer and basketball in the gym, playing x-box, or just hanging out with their friends.

Gus Psaradelis-5th Grade

Gus, a three sport athlete here at the Club, played tackle football in the fall, basketball in the winter, and now is participating in flag football during the spring season. Gus had a tremendous winter season, leading the Division I Warriors to a one loss season before losing in the semifinals. Gus lives in the gym or the football field, always working to get better on his game. Gus was also a huge help this winter during basketball season. He constantly helped Joe and Matt in the gym with the scorer's table, doing the clock, and the scoring book. Gus is not only a role model for other kids here at the Club but also for his younger sister Willow. Gus has had a great year and we look forward to seeing what Gus does going forward this spring in flag football and for years to come here at the Club! Congratulations Gus!

Playing basketball for her first time in a few years, Sophia was a force to be reckon with on the court, always playing with a great attitude and working hard at all times. Although she plays with tenacity on the court, you can always find her off the court with a smile on her face. Sophia is always there to lend a helping hand, either cleaning up outside or in the gym. Sophia  has done a great job with boxing training. Sophia is such a light hearted person and such a good role model not only to her peers but also her younger cousin Andreas. After her performance this winter, we look forward to seeing what Sophia does for years to come here at the Club!
