10th Grade English "Destroy a Book" project as part of
Fahrenheit 451 study

As an adolescent, I found myself fascinated by an annual exhibition, put on by a local art gallery, in which each artist transformed a plain wooden box into a work of art that expresses a range of experiences, ideas, and emotions. One transformed box in particular has stayed with me: a pile of ashes on a flat wooden tray.
Heroism and justice are among the various themes explored in the 10th grade English curriculum. One of the texts we study is Ray Bradbury's
Fahrenheit 451, which has led to many lively discussions on censorship, symbolism, personal responsibility, and the human thirst for knowledge. When planning our book study, I reached back to my experience of the ashes on the tray and decided to ask the students to destroy (and subsequently transform) a book. Each 10th grader plans their destruction of a hardback book, carefully linking the intended results to their individual understanding of Bradbury's cautionary tale. Fire, naturally, tends to feature heavily, as do symbols from the text such as the salamander, phoenix, and mirror.
This year's "Destroy a Book" projects include a world on fire, Montag's evolution towards freedom, parallels between a gun and a book of poetry, two flipbooks, and more.

Craft & Conversation
Tuesday, Dec 17 from 8:30-10am
Craft & Conversation is an ongoing handwork group that meets every Tuesday morning in the school lobby from 8:30–10am throughout the year. The group creates handcrafted items to gain experience in Waldorf crafting, to support the Fall Bazaar, and to work on other projects as well. Please stop by and join our craft circle. No prior experience necessary to participate - we have projects for any skill level!

Parent Organization Holiday Meeting
Thursday, Dec 12 from 8:30-9:30am in the front foyer
Please join us TOMORROW for our monthly open Parent Organization meeting. This month we offer the usual coffee and baked goods along with festive holiday cheer.
Agenda items include:
- We invite all Bazaar Coordinators to come so we can thank you in person for your leadership!
- Faculty Chair Jennifer Page will share a few words and answer questions you may have.
- We will thank Carolina Carvalho Cheida for all her hard work and wish her a warm farewell as she heads back to Brazil soon.
- We will also share info on bookclub, carpool, and more!

Thinking Diversity Coffee
with the Committee for Diversity, Equity, and Social Justice - "Indigenous Voices"

Elizabeth Rule, PhD will join us for this conversation on "Indigenous Voices." Dr. Rule is
an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. She serves as the Assistant Director of the AT&T Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy, Director of the Semester in Washington Politics Program, and Faculty in Residence at the George Washington University. She is also a Postdoctoral Fellow in American Studies and the Critical Race, Gender, and Culture Studies Collaborative at American University.

Evergreen Spiral - Open to the Community
Friday, Dec 13 at 1:15pm
Current families, alumni families, and community friends are invited to walk the evergreen spiral this year. Each participant is given a candle to light and add to the path of the spiral. This contemplative activity is a time of peaceful reflection giving us an opportunity to connect to our inner light as we approach the winter solstice and the darkest days of the year.
**The first 25 seats booked very quickly. We've been able to expand and are offering a few more spots. Please RSVP below to reserve your place.

Carol Sing
Saturday, Dec 14 at 5pm
The Carol Sing is a beloved WWS tradition. All are welcome to join us in the beautifully decorated WWS auditorium to sing seasonal songs from a variety of faith traditions, accompanied by our community orchestra. Come early though, since the auditorium is always packed. This is an occasion to warm your heart and soul, and set you in the mood of the season.

Shepherds' Play
Thursday, Dec 19 at 7pm

The WWS faculty warmly invites all members of the community to this year's Shepherds' Play on Dec 19 at 7pm. The Shepherds' Play is one of three “miracle plays" called the Oberufer Plays which originated in central Europe in the Middle Ages. The plays were passed down orally through the generations until an associate of Rudolf Steiner wrote them down in the late 19th century. Rudolf Steiner and the teachers in the first Waldorf school in Stuttgart performed these plays, and they have since been performed at Waldorf schools throughout the world. The Shepherds' Play is offered as a gift from the WWS faculty to the community. Please join us for an evening of witty language, singing, physical comedy, and moments of wonder. The Shepherds' Play is suitable for all ages.
