Loose and juicy watercolor of a tropical boat scene
Demo  with Ellen Negley

Ellen Negley is a watercolor artist living in Lake Worth, Florida. For her, watercolor is the perfect medium. It's elusive, unpredictable and has a mind of its own. She is fascinated by its nuances. One minute the colors are bold and electric and the next they're delicate and transparent. She says that although traditionally, watercolor is done by first drawing the subject matter in pencil on the paper and then painting on top of the sketch. she decided the pencil marks were inhibiting so she eliminated them. Now she just starts from the top and paints her way down the paper. Although she says it's a lot riskier starting that way, she enjoys the unexpected things that happen along the way. She likes the feeling of losing control of a painting and then trying to get it back.

Her subject matter almost always involves the figure. She chooses busy urban settings where she can use lots of color and have people bustling about. Although she often moves things around for composition's sake, she rarely eliminates elements to make a "pretty" picture. If there happens to be telephone poles in the scene, they'll likely end up in my painting!
