A 93-Point Knockout California Cabernet from Marietta Cellars!

The 2016 Marietta Cellars "Armé" Cabernet Sauvignon is a striking, rich, complex and utterly irresistible gem. At $19.99, it also appears to be the lowest priced Cabernet to ever earn 93 points from Antonio Galloni!

"More than anything else, though, the Armé is a superb value in California Cabernet."
- Antonio Galloni, 5/2019

Founded by Chris Bilbo in 1978, Marietta is now operated by his son, winemaker Scot Bilbro. Scot reminisces, "I grew up watching my dad do magic." That family tradition of magic is in full force in this 2016 Armé Cab. Flavors of black cherry and cassis combine with hints of mint, fresh herbs, mocha and licorice to produce a complex and delicious wine that is flat-out delicious and a flat-out bargain.

2016 Marietta Cellars "Armé" Cabernet Sauvignon
California
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 2016 Armé Cabernet opens with a blast of ripe black fruits which are quickly complemented with flavors of mint, fresh herbs, tobacco, subtle mocha and warm baking spices. These classic Cabernet flavors continue through to the finish with a mouthwatering burst of acidity, making the Cabernet goodness shine brightly. At thirty bucks, it would be a "WOW" wine. At $19.99, it is a knock-you-off-the-chair phenom!
Scot Bilbro crafts this wine from his estate vineyards in Alexander Valley and McDowell Valley. 20 months aging in neutral oak barrels allows the pure Cab essence to perform in a starring role. When we saw Galloni's 93-point review, we were impressed. When we dug through the tasting note archives at both Vinous and Wine Advocate, we came to the conclusion that this looks to be the lowest priced California Cabernet to EVER earn such a high score from Galloni!
"Fresh, savory and super-expressive, the Armé has a lot going on. Black cherry, sage, lavender, menthol and licorice give the wine striking savory nuance to play off the dark Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. More than anything else, though, the Armé is a superb value in California Cabernet. Drinking Window: 2020 - 2030."
- 93 Points, Vinous - Antonio Galloni (5/2019)
This complex, estate-grown sensation is one of the most remarkable values you will find in California Cabernet today. Special enough to impress your Saturday dinner guests, yet priced low enough for Tuesday night, this one is going to fly!
2016 Marietta Cellars "Gibson Block" Syrah
McDowell Valley, Mendocino County, California
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Produced from a dry-farmed parcel of some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache vines in California, the single-vineyard "Gibson Block" Syrah is intensely flavorful and impeccably balanced.

Antonio Galloni calls this 650 case production red a "star of this range" and that is no exaggeration. Robust and dynamic, it deftly walks the line between subtle and complex, and plush and powerful. Fans of intense California reds, this one is for you!

Awarding a well-deserved 95 points, Antonio Galloni writes...

"The 2016 Syrah Estate Gibson Block is the star of this range from Marietta. From a dry-farmed site planted in the 1880s, the Gibson Block is powerful, sumptuous and racy to the core. A whole range of complementary varieties give the Gibson Block striking inner perfume and lift to play off the intense dark fruit, while silky tannins add to the wine's racy, inviting personality. Drinking Window: 2022 - 2036."
