Throwback Thursday - John Steinbeck's "Cannery Row"
“Perhaps that might be the way to write this book--to open the page and to let the stories crawl in by themselves.” John Steinbeck's novel, Cannery Row
John Steinbeck's novel is set in Monterey during the Great Depression on a street lined with sardine canneries that is known as Cannery Row. The story revolves around the people living there: Lee Chong, the local grocer; Doc, a marine biologist; and Mack, the leader of a group of unemployed yet resourceful men who inhabit a converted fishmeal shack on the edge of a vacant lot down on the Row. Cannery Row ignited Steinbeck’s imagination, and his affection for the colorful mix of people there influenced a number of stories and characters. Their stories leapt right into his classic novels. His work is grounded in his memories of real Cannery Row inhabitants and locations. Before you visit Cannery Row next time, read Steinbeck's novel and then visit the locations that inspired his stories! Photo credit: @hamofearth via Instagram
