Why spay your female dog?

Meet Trixie, an 8 yr old intact female who was dropped off at a vet in MN by her owners as the result of her being ill for more than five days. The vet ran tests to confirm she had pyometra. This is a common and fatal disease that exclusively affects female dogs that have not been spayed.

Trixie would need to be spayed within hours; otherwise she would not make it through the night. The only way to prevent and to treat pyometra is by spaying.
Trixie made it through surgery and was monitored by the clinic for a few days afterwards, as her liver was impacted by the severe infection.

Congrats to Trixie who has found her forever home and is now loving life.

Adoptable Dog of the Month - Toby

Hi, my name is Toby!  I am 13 years old and weigh 14 pounds.  I'm working on adding a few more pounds.  I need a new home because my human became ill.   I am being fostered in Fridley, MN.

I love to nap, anywhere any time but especially at your side.  I have become hard of hearing and have some difficulty with my sight.  I get along with adults, children, and other pets, but I would rather not have other pets that might want to jump on me.

I need a house without a lot of stairs for me, without too many obstacles to navigate around and a family that will love me forever.

Here's what my foster mom has to say about me:  "Toby is a very sweet boy! He's very thin but his vet records say he has always been thin. He still has a lot of play and love to give, but sometimes needs alone time. He's a great napper and cuddler. Doesn't lick or give kisses."

I do take an eye cream to help with my vision, but it costs only around $15 per month.

***Eligible for the Golden Paws Program!***

UPDATE
Bingo's Story: Just One Example of Why We Go to Breeder Auctions

RECAP: On April 22, 2018 MABTR attended a dog auction in Missouri and for $225, we bid against other breeders and won lot 112 - a purebred five year old female boston. We gave her the name of Bingo.
Bingo entered rescue underweight, chronic ear infections, severe fungal and bacterial infections on her body and a swollen check draining puss. Her skin was scaly and hard, looking more like an alligator than the soft fuzzy belly a puppy should have. She was miserable, scratching herself constantly and unable to relax. She refused to eat and showed clear signs she was in pain. Her chest hung low from the multiple litters she had at such a young age.
UPDATE: The decision was finally made undergo the removal of Bingo's ear canal and eardrum due to the body continuing to close up the ear. This is called a Total Ear Canal Ablation. She was already deaf in the ear.
She also underwent a mastectomy of her lower breast as they continued to get irritated and infected as a result of sitting and peeing where the breast laid on the ground
Bingo is now in her forever home in Iowa where she has recovered completely and living a happy, comfortable and healthy life after being probed, medicated and underwent multiple surgeries in a 2.5 month period.

Age is just a number...

Meet Hank!  He was born on 10/14/2006 and was turned over to MABTR in July 2018 due to his owner's health declining.

Would you have guessed from these photos he is almost 12??

Moral of the story: Do not judge adult/senior dogs by their age but by their character and personality.  They have a lot of love left to give.

*Hank has already been adopted but there are many more needing homes just like him.
MABTR Alumni - Tudor

Our Boston Terrier, Phil, lived his entire 13 ½ years with us and passed over the Rainbow Bridge in May 2016.    At the beginning of 2017 my husband and I decided it was time for us to have another Boston Terrier join our family.    We started looking at the available dogs at Mid-American Boston Terrier Rescue and there were so many good choices but one stood out.    Tudor, a 7 year old BT mix, seemed to have all the qualities and traits we were looking for in a dog.
We were approved to adopt Tudor but naturally we were worried on how well he would adjust to a new home.  Well, he came in the front door, went out back to go to the bathroom, came back in the house, laid down in the dog bed and started chewing on a toy.  He knew he was home.  From that point on it has all been great as Tudor may be the happiest dog we have ever seen.  It is obvious that he has been well treated his entire life and that his original owner had always been very good to him.

I would highly recommend people considering adopting their new dog from MABTR.  We were fortunate enough to qualify for the wonderful Golden Paws program due to Tudor's age and our age. Never be scared off by a dog's age or appearance, great ones come in all ages and looks.  I can't say enough how happy Tudor has made us and I think how happy we have made him.

Ask Jennifer

Q: How important is it to take care of my dog's teeth?  What should I look out for?

A: MABTR cannot express strongly enough how important it is to have your dog's teeth checked.  If your vet tells you the dog needs a dental, listen to them.
These pictures shared are of three Bostons that recently came into MABTR's care (ages are 6, 8, and 10 years old).  All three were owner surrenders.  Their conditions were u nacceptable, and we cannot imagine the pain these dogs were in.  Had they not have been turned into rescue, they may have never received the dental they so much needed.

The cost of a dental is pennies compared to the cost of cleaning out these mouths in the photos.

Between these three dogs MABTR spent over $2700 in dental care alone. Not addressing the issue would be inhumane.

Signs to watch for that warrant your dog's teeth to be checked by a vet:
- reduced eating and/or loss of appetite
- no longer interested in taking hard treats
- drooling
- constant leaking of the front paws (this is for comfort from pain) or other items (the floor, couch, etc)
- bad breathe (this can be from rot, decay and/or infection)
- bleeding gums (finding also blood on items that the dog has chewed on)
- sensitive to the touch of the face

How often do you go to the dentist?

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
