Rutgers was selected as one of five new hubs under the National Institutes of Health's Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hubs (REACH) program to speed up the translation of biomedical discoveries into commercially viable diagnostics, devices, therapeutics, and tools to improve patient care, enhance health, and train the next generation of innovators.
The new Rutgers Optimizes Innovation (ROI) Program, supported by $4 million over four years, will integrate the university's strengths in the biomedical/bioengineering sciences and the solid expertise of its Research Commercialization team within the Office of Research and Economic Development to swiftly uncover, develop and seamlessly guide innovators through the commercialization process with financial and regulatory, IP protection, mentoring, management, and educational resources.
The ROI Program brings together Rutgers-New Brunswick's schools of engineering and arts and sciences, the university's medical schools, nursing programs, dental program, public health, and research institutes and centers - including the Rutgers Cancer Institute and the New Jersey Center for Biomaterials - with industries, incubators, funders and policymakers.

As of January 21, 2020, ALL federally-funded collaborative human subject research projects will require the use of a Single IRB, not just projects funded by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers
submitting federally-funded grant proposals that will include collaborative Human Subjects Research need to obtain the IRB's determination regarding who will serve as the IRB of record at least six weeks in advance of submission.

FastLane and Research.gov will be unavailable from Friday, November 8 at 8:00 PM EST until Tuesday, November 12 at 6:00 AM EST while the
National Science Foundation (NSF) migrates its business applications to a modern and flexible platform. As part of this effort, NSF will also upgrade the alpha-numeric character set used by the FastLane and Research.gov systems to correct textual errors, such as special characters displaying as
question marks in proposals and project reports. During this outage, there will be no access to these websites, proposals cannot be prepared or submitted in FastLane and Research.gov, and project reports and cash requests cannot be submitted in Research.gov. However, previously saved information and uploaded documents in FastLane and Research.gov, including in-progress proposals and project reports, will be accessible after the migration is completed.

irector of the Aging & Brain Health Alliance at Rutgers-Newark, we've learned that Tara Gandhi, featured in the last Research Connections newsletter, is not the only living relative of Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Gluck met another living relative recently during
part of a collaboration he established on studies of lifestyle factors that affect risk and resilience to Alzheimer's disease in rural and urban Indians.

Consider taking the

Rutgers to Host Exhibition Booth at SuperComputing 2019 Conference
The
Office of Advanced Research Computing
(OARC) is participating in the SuperComputing 2019 (SC19) Conference next month in Denver, Colorado as a Research Exhibitor, joining peer and Big Ten universities. For the third consecutive year, OARC will host a booth to meet and talk with the world's leading experts in High Performance Computing, networking, storage, and analysis. In addition to highlighting the visual research of Rutgers' faculty, staff, and students, OARC will feature a live demonstration of the
Eastern Regional Network
federation on the booth floor. Congratulations to OARC's student staff who received student travel grants to attend the conference: Muhammad Awan, Hamid Abbasi, and Abdullah Ghani. To find out how your research can be showcased, contact Janae Baker.

Brain Research Foundation's Seed Grant Program was founded in 1981 with the goal of providing start-up money for new and innovative research projects that have the potential to become competitive for an NIH grant or other external funding sources.
U.S. institutions are invited to nominate one faculty member to submit a Letter of Intent for the Fay/Frank Seed Grant Program. To be eligible, the PI must be a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor working in the field of neuroscience.
Proposals are limited to one per university and pre-proposals must be submitted through the
Rutgers Limited Submission
process. Internal Application Deadline:
November 19, 2019.

To foster further innovation and to deepen collaboration with academia, Facebook is inviting faculty to respond to a call for research proposals pertaining to various machine learning topics. Proposals are highly encouraged to focus funding on project personnel, especially PhD students. Proposals from small interdisciplinary teams with complementary expertise are also encouraged. November 1, 2019.

The HHMI Investigator Program supports nearly 300 Investigators, located at more than 60 research institutions across the United States, who are widely known for their scientific discoveries, their innovation, and their success in pushing the bounds of knowledge in biomedical research. Applications are accepted from eligible scientists who hold a PhD or MD, plan to perform research at one of 200+ eligible U.S. institutions, hold a position that represents substantial commitment by their institution (i.e. tenure-track faculty position), and have a track record of peer-reviewed funding. Deadline: March 18, 2020.
