Help Wanted: CT biotech companies seek lab space in which to grow
Biotechnology usually is at the top of the list when discussions occur about economic drivers for the New Haven area and the state as a whole, both now and in the future.

But there is a key impediment to Connecticut's biotechnology sector realizing its full potential: A lack of lab space. And suprisingly, there are no estimates out there regarding how much more lab space is needed both in the short term and over a more extended period.

A lack of lab space for small and growing medium-sized biotech companies puts the New Haven area and Connecticut at disadvantage compared to other parts of the country, said Paul Pescatello, senior counsel and executive director of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association's Bioscience Growth Council. Plans progress for Neuroscience Institute
Around a year after it was first proposed, plans for a new neuroscience institute at Yale are moving forward as administrators solidify the institute's core goals and search for its faculty.

University administrators have released a report for the new institute - which is set to open in 2022 - that outlines five focus areas for the center. This report was a product of the Neuroscience Working Group, which was formed last April to discuss specific plans for the neuroscience institute. In a December email to faculty, University Provost Scott Strobel encouraged faculty to provide their observations and feedback about the recommendations via a webform. He added that the recommendations would be considered by the appropriate deans and department chairs. Read More

Guilford residents approve donation of land for affordable housing
The room at Guilford's Nathanael B. Greene Community Center was packed Tuesday night with hundreds of residents who had come to vote on whether to convey a parcel of land downtown to NeighborWorks New Horizons, a nonprofit that aims to develop 16 affordable housing units on the town's Woodruff property.

It was the biggest turnout that Tom Cruess, the organization's president, had seen at such a meeting in Connecticut, he told the crowd. Folks tasked with issuing vote cards said they handed out 261.

After a night where some citizens raised questions or voiced concerns about the project, and others gave impassioned remarks about the importance of affordable housing in town, those pink vote cards filled the air to deliver a decision overwhelmingly in favor of moving the project forward. Going mobile: FDA clears world's first bedside MRI scanner-on-wheels
The FDA has cleared the world's first portable MRI system, designed to be wheeled to a hospital bedside for scanning a patient's head and brain.

Developed by [Guilford's] Hyperfine Research for people age two and older, the point-of-care imaging system weighs about one-tenth that of a conventional, fixed MRI system. About three feet wide and five feet tall, the device fits in an elevator and runs off an everyday power outlet to create both clinical contrast images and 3D renders.

"More than 40 years after its first use, MRI remains a marvel. Unfortunately, it also remains inaccessible," Hyperfine Chief Medical Officer Khan Siddiqui said in a statement. "It's time that MRI made the jump to point of need just like X-ray and ultrasound have before it." Read More

UNH Celebrates NSA Designation, New Cybersecurity Center
We frequently hear of cyberattacks around the world and here in Connecticut, whether it's a school system or a major company.

Those cyberattacks are always a threat and the University of New Haven is taking the lead in fighting them with its growing cybersecurity program, recently awarded by the National Security Agency.

"Since 2013 we've been ramping up cybersecurity at the university and our enrollment has gone up 300 percent," said Abe Baggili, director of the University of New Haven's new Samuel S. Bergami Cybersecurity Center.

That center will help students and the school continue to grow. Last fall was the largest incoming class of cybersecurity students at the university.  Read More
