The Northwest Campanologist
 Beginning with the November/December 2004 issue, I have been putting together and sending out the Campanologist. This job used to be part of the job description for the Chair Elect. Since quality candidates for Chair Elect didn't always have that skill, it was decided to have another person take on the publishing job. That became me. It was printed and mailed every other month to all members of Area 10.
In 2010 the area took the plunge into an email newsletter and has been in this format ever since. The cost savings was huge, we could send out monthly newsletters with even other news going out as a special edition if needed, and anyone including all the musicians in the member choirs could receive it. Information, registration, etc. for events could easily be linked directly from the newsletter.
The time has come for me to retire. I have been on the Area 10 board since February 1998 when I finished a vacant term as Oregon Chair. I have enjoyed my years on the board and getting to meet so many of you at various events across our beautiful area. I will still be active with handbells as a soloist, choir director, and organizer of the Snake River Handbell Conference as well as attending other events in our area.
Taking over as Communications Chair is Joann Wallenburn from Seeley Lake, MT. We will be working together on the October issue.
I had to share the picture above even though it was windy. My husband and I were in the beautiful state of Alaska in August, and the day we were in Denali National Park was absolutely perfect with not a cloud in the sky.

Notes from the Chair
I guess it's time to say goodbye. This will be the last article I write for you as Chair of Area 10 - my term expires October 1. I will still be on the board for two more years as Past Chair, but that office is largely advisory.
So what tidbits do I have to share in my last article? I looked back at the first article I wrote as Chair, and I think we are still trying to answer many of the same questions I asked in that article:
"What do you need from your Area? Is it more in the way of education and workshops? Is it more access to different ringing events? Is it something we haven't thought of? What makes membership in Handbell Musicians of America relevant for you?"
As Chair, I admit I often got bogged down with these questions. "Am I doing enough? What do people want from us? What will it take to get folks more engaged?"
But as I went back and re-read my articles of the past two years, the ones that spoke to me most were not the ones where I talked about the Guild and what it was doing. The ones that spoke to me most were the one where I talked about making music or a musical experience.
Hmmm....that is why we're all in this, isn't it? We love to make music and share it with others.
So maybe that will be my advice as I move into the Past Chair position: to focus on the music. If making good music is our chief goal, maybe the rest will follow: great events, fun workshops, better attendance, and more members.
So I'll do my best to keep the horse before the cart, keeping us focused on creating circumstances where we can make great music. As an area board, we will keep trying to help you in your musical endeavors. If you have any ideas or answers to the above eternal questions, please let us know what they are. In the meantime, I have been honored to serve as your Chair. I have met so many new friends and look forward to keeping in touch with all of you.

Making Music, Building Community

I have found something new to celebrate! It's been there all along, but I get so immersed in planning rehearsals, finding subs, and adapting music to worship services that I don't always see the big picture. Fortunately, my pastor does see big pictures, and she knows what to nurture. What she appreciates most about our handbell choir is the strong sense of community she observes when we rehearse or perform. Beyond simply appreciating our music, she recognizes the undercurrent of individuals working toward a group goal, and that is what she values most. Because it was never my conscious goal to build a community, I was surprised to hear this comment and wondered what contributed to our cohesiveness!
I am always quick to tout music-making as good exercise for the brain but have never considered community-building as an equally important outcome of music-making. It certainly is. Especially now that depression is more understood and that we have an epidemic of suicide in our country. People become isolated. In this day and age of ultra-connected individuals, isolation is a problem! In that dire context, I wanted to celebrate the little I know about group music-making, whether it is a chorus, a band.... or a handbell choir! How do we foster cohesiveness in the handbell choir? How can we do more?
Enter Dr. Debbie Fingas, who describes herself as a pioneer in the field of Spirituality of Church Music Groups. Debbie led a session at the HMA National Seminar in Grand Rapids last month. I was fortunate to attend and joined in the discussion about building community in the handbell choir.
Consider the musicians sharing and helping to find group solutions to problems. This is not just practical, but contributes to a sense of responsibility and ownership in the group. Also during a rehearsal, players naturally want to offer help to others. (Sometimes this needs to be managed, right?) The process of putting away all the equipment is the certainly a community effort. In fact, it has the look of an anthill with every player performing task after task, communicating, moving and yielding to others, etc. It is noisy, productive, and very social. It is more difficult to describe the unified physicality when playing music and striving to achieve a shared goal of musicality. Read books by the experts on those subjects!
In the session with Debbie Fingas, we brainstormed ways we can encourage working together. Some have always sounded mundane to me, but I often need to be pulled back to reality:
- Have a "sunshine committee (or person)...someone with a supply of greeting cards who makes sure birthdays are recognized and other occasions, too.
- Have a social event, including a polishing party.
- Have a monthly treat time. Stop the rehearsal early and enjoy treats and each other.
- Do an outreach project. Play at a nursing home or a senior citizen center. Gather the group to assemble gift baskets. Novel idea: Go to someone's kitchen. Cook, bag, and freeze food to distribute in emergencies.
- Go to a bell festival.
- Go to a concert (and dinner) together.
- Play a game: Crimes Against Handbells (new to me!)
- Form partnerships. Within the church, the sunshine person can be part of the pastoral care committee. Outside of the church, the handbell choir can combine with other choirs in the city.
Know that the handbell choir can be a microcosm of what the church should be. That is powerful and just where I want to be. I am honored to be able to facilitate the building of a strong community of musicians.

Coppers Classic 2018 - October 12-14
Coppers Classic
is a massed ringing event for advanced coppers handbell musicians held annually in Portland, Oregon with Ellie Hodder, clinician. Our handbell musicians are solidly coppers musicians. They have good handbell skills, a commitment to their ensemble and are the backbone of their choir. Passion and the desire to learn and grow as a handbell musician are the qualities that characterize those who will have a great Coppers Classic experience but, most of all they love handbells!
Participants come from all over the United States and Canada.
Musicians rehearse for three days and present a public concert on Sunday October 14, 2018 at 4 pm.

 Our Guest conductor this year is Barbara Meinke. A life-long California girl she is celebrating 25 years as director of Handbell and Choral music at Hope Lutheran Church in Temecula, CA. Barbara has conducted for massed ringing events in Redding CA and as the Advanced condcutor for PAM's Music and Worship conference in Montreat, NC and taught at National Seminar. Ellie Hodder will be conducting the Bronze Conference Choir track this year. Participation is open to all registrants by application. As always the Bronze Conference Choir is by application, with rehearsals beginning on Friday afternoon at 4pm.

Ringing in Paradise
The Rogue Ringers International, an Ad Hoc Bell Choir of The Rogue Ringers of Medford, OR, attended the 18th International Handbell Symposium in Cairns Australia Aug 6th-11th. We joined about 300 other ringers from around the world making music together.

This is the third International Symposium I have attended. I began to feel like an "old pro", recognizing faces, if not names, from previous symposia. We all enjoyed a week of ringing music representing and coming out of the many cultures among the participants. Australia offered an original piece "Creation of the Barrier Reef" which depicted the Aboriginal story about the creation of the Barrier Reef, Canada offered us a tone poem depicting the Aurora Borealis and Singapore's musical offering was an original musical depiction of the history of Singapore from the time before contact with westerners, through the colonial days and its flowering into the independent state it is today. The workshops ranged from culture experiences; making Chinese Knot Ornaments, Japanese Wrapping Cloths, Korean Mask Dancing to name just a few to the usual handbell technique workshops including one on basics of the Cajon and its use with bells. Maybe because is was a smaller group of ringers, or the way we all shared the buffet lines and mixed with each other at the breaks and meals or that this was my third International event I felt that I really got to experience more fully the intent of the International Handbell Symposia "World Peace...through the spirit of music" and specially the theme for the event "Together in Harmony".
