3 Gatton Academy students recognized by NCWIT Aspirations in Computing
Second-year Gatton Academy student Mina Ryumae of Union has obtained national recognition for her achievements in computing, receiving Honorable Mention in the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) Awards for Aspirations in Computing (AiC). In addition, second-year Gatton students Gloria Huang of Bowling Green and Jada Hunter-Hays of Hodgenville are each Kentucky Affiliate Winners.
Folk Studies graduate student pursues research on pandemic, other challenges
Like the rest of us, Ellie Dassler – a Folk Studies master’s student from Williamsburg, Virginia – is trying to make sense of COVID-19. Dassler, however, is employing her master’s research to understand the pandemic through a different lens. Her research centers on the experiences of professional folklorists and culture workers navigating a world in crisis. Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, Dassler is exploring the present racial and economic inequalities’ impact on folklorists.
WKU Board of Regents to meet Friday

WKU in Owensboro students can enroll in new online BSW program
WKU will launch a new online Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) this fall, giving students the option to complete their degree in person at WKU in Owensboro or 100% online – or a combination of both. The new 100% online program will provide an additional option for adult learners throughout the region.
Spotlight: Sandra Staebell
Sandra Staebell is the Registrar/Collections Curator at the Kentucky Museum at WKU Her love of history led her to study Public History and Museum Studies in school, with a B.A. in History from the University of Northern Iowa and an M.A. in Museum Science from Texas Tech University. From there she moved to the Kentucky Museum in 1988 and has been there ever since.
WKU will offer free online exam strategy workshops
This spring, WKU will offer two free online standardized exam strategy workshops for students preparing to the ACT, SAT, or GRE. The online workshops are led by experienced instructors who have a thorough understanding of each exam and can provide an introduction to test mechanics, scoring, and valuable study tips to help prepare for the exams.
Women's History Month
WKU is hosting a series of events in March to observe Women’s History Month. Highlights include a Women’s Conference on Saturday and a Women of Worth Banquet on March 26. The 2021 Women’s History Month theme, selected by the National Women's History Alliance, is “Valiant Women of the Vote.” For updates, follow @wkuisec on Instagram or visit the ISEC website.
Studio Series this weekend
WKU's Department of Theatre & Dance will present Studio Series 2021 this weekend. The streaming performances of four one-act plays directed, acted and designed by WKU students, will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10.
