St. Michael's Academy
:
Well, it was an atypical first week of school with this crazy heat and humidity that necessitated half days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Despite the extreme temperatures, the staff and students made the best of it and we had a good first week.
Today was a welcomed change in temperature, but they tell me the heat and humidity will be returning next week. We will be allowing students to wear their gym uniforms all of next week so they can be as cool as possible. I wonder if we will ever say we want to escape the cold again!
The number of students who completed my Moby Max summer challenge was very impressive. Many of the students I spoke with said they did a little bit every day and it didn't take away from having summer fun. Thank you for your support with Moby Max and for all you have done to prepare your child(ren) for their transition back into the school routine.
I hope everyone enjoys a great long weekend.
God's blessings,

First Day of School Mass
We send out a big thank you to Fr. Wayne Biernat and Deacon Dennis Skowera from St. Michael's Parish in East Longmeadow for celebrating our first day of school Mass with us.
Fr. Wayne spoke to the students and challenged them to change their way of thinking as they are about to do something. Instead of thinking "I have to," try to think of it as "I get to." He also played a super hero game with the students and Camrie in Grade 1 correctly guessed that Jesus was Fr. Wayne's super hero. Her prize? A crisp dollar bill - what a treat!
We also thank our 8th grade students for doing a great job hosting the Mass!

A Hands-On Approach to Atom Theory and
the Periodic Table of Elements
Welcome to Science Class!
As we all know, atoms make up every facet of this world; from the air we breath to the massive space stations currently in orbit. But....have you ever been able to examine an atom up close? St.Michael's sixth grade science class most certainly has! Through a hands-on modeling activity, students were able to demonstrate their learning about atom-theory and the periodic table of elements.
Elements are substances that are made entirely of one type of atom. Certain atoms differ from one another mainly due to their weight. This weight is dictated by the amount of subatomic particles each atom has. Each subatomic particle differs in regard to the electrical charge it holds. Protons are positive, electrons are negative, and neutrons hold no charge.
Each student was assigned an element from the periodic table found in their student planners. The students were then asked to calculate the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons based on the atomic number and atomic mass of their individual atoms. To further enhance the learning and retention of the material, the students were then asked to use color coordinated art supplies to accurately model their atom.

Registration Extended For One More Week!
Due to the extreme heat and humidity, registration for Girls On The Run has been extended for one more week! This is your chance ladies to be part of an awesome opportunity! St. Michael's Academy will be having two groups: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.
Each season, team members learn to recognize their individual strengths, and gain a better understanding of who they are, what's important to them, the value of teamwork, and developing healthy relationships.
Over the course of the ten-week program, they develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. All girls in Grades 3-5 and 6-8 are welcome - nobody needs to be a runner. Our fall season will begin the second week in September and continue for 10 weeks, ending with our GOTR 5k at Smith College.
We are also still looking for additional coaches for both teams. Coaches do not need to be runners. We hope you will join us for another great season!
For more information, please contact Kristie Budrecki at [email protected] or 413-271-4700, or go to www.girlsontherunwesternma.org.
