THE GLOBAL BIG LATCH ON IN MONROE
The Global Big Latch On takes place annually during World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7) at various locations around the world. The Monroe Big Latch On is organized by the Union County WIC Breastfeeding Program and takes place at Belk Tonawanda Park.

The purpose of the Big Latch On is to celebrate, promote, and support breastfeeding in our community and around the world. Breastfeeding women, their friends, family, and the community join the celebration and breastfeeding women all latch their babies at the same time across the globe. This event creates a lasting support network for the community and aims to strengthen national and global support for breastfeeding. The 2018 Monroe Big Latch On event had 12 breastfeeding women latch their babies and a total of 43 in attendance including family members, friends, and peer support.

The Breastfeeding Support program is funded in part by Alliance for Children. 780 post-partum mothers were served in the program who breastfed their babies from July 2017-June 2018.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR NC PRE-K
Over 100 NC Pre-Kindergarten educators experienced a hands-on professional development day with Conscious Discipline Trainer Kim Hughes.  Conscious Discipline is the classroom management system teachers currently use in NC Pre-K. It equips educators to integrate social-emotional learning, discipline and self-regulation so they spend less time policing behavior and more time teaching vital life skills.

NC Pre-K is a free, high quality program designed to enhance school readiness for eligible four-year-old children. Children MUST be 4 years old by August 31st.

Pictured above are parents participating in Motheread.

Motheread classes provide parents with the skills and encouragement to become their child's first and most important teacher.  Using curriculum based on multicultural children's books, these classes help parents support the age-appropriate, literacy skill development of their infants, toddlers and preschoolers while improving their own listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

The class has become so popular with moms, this month three new fathers signed up for the class.

After a 'Back to School' Fair at Iglesia Camino two weeks ago, the next two sessions are completely booked. For more information contact Jeni Llerena, Program manager at 704.226.1429.

Motheread is funded through Alliance for Children and provided through a partnership with the Literacy Council of Union County.
