Ready, set, go:
'Tis the season to slack.

What do I mean? Well, it's that beautiful time at the College right after midterms and spring break, but still a considerable distance away from summer, when most everyone loses motivation--and fast. When asked how I'm doing, I find myself consistently answering, "Oh, I'm hanging in there. . ." or "Tired. Really tired . . ." and upon returning the question, I find I hear the same thing from everyone else. So, if we're all this exhausted, unmotivated, and simply DONE, what happens to our school work, grades, and extracurricular activities? We tend to hear from professors that the outcome is entirely up to us, but is it? What's the solution to this post-spring break lag when it come to juggling all of our commitments?

In my mind, that's where the Environmental Center saves our sanity. I continue to see the brilliance in the EC's staff structure more each semester. Instead of placing a project's weight solely on one individual, it's placed on a group. This way, the work load shifts with the eb and flow of teammates' schedules, so the work still gets done and everyone gets to interact with at least a small piece of the end product. Otherwise, we literally wouldn't ever get anything done. One person can only grind through a massive project for so long without burning out, especially in an academic setting. It takes a village. I can't tell you how many times my to-do list has been filled to the rim and Marty or Rachel or a fellow student staff will say, "What can I take off your plate?"

After reflecting more and more on this collaborative structure, I find myself striving to model other projects and teams in my life to function the same way. In our current political and social climate, it's easy to put too much weight on our own shoulders, often in the form of guilt, and never actually make anything happen--to seek change but actually remain more stagnant in the meantime. The solution? Well, again, it takes a village. What's yours?
