Matthew McClelland Attends Ed Doherty Banquet

On Saturday, Sophomore QB Matthew McClelland was one of 56 Arizona high school football players who attended the prestigious Ed Doherty Award Luncheon, hosted by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. Matthew was joined by his family and Head Coach Smith at the awards. He was the only 1A representative, and only sophomore nominated. The winner of the award was Bijan Robinson, running back for Salpointe Catholic in Tuscon. He will attend the University of Texas next fall, and won the award last season as well.

As a Sophomore, McClelland earned the 1A East Region Offensive Player of the Year. He averaged 241 passing yards per game, and 120 per game on the ground. In the regular season he ranked 1st in total yards per game among all 1-6A QB's.

Chargers Earn Three Home Wins Friday Night

It was a busy night on the Arete campus Friday night, and the Chargers came away with three wins over visiting teams.

The womens varsity soccer team downed Heritage-Laveen on a 2nd half Lille Whitehead penalty kick, her second goal of the young season. The Chargers dominated possession and shots, but couldn't break through until the decisive PK. Tania Davidson filled in for the injured Helen Letizia in goal and earned a 2 save shutout.

In JV basketball action, Chris Akpede was the hero as he hit a game winning three pointer with seven seconds left to lift the Chargers to a 33-31 win vs. Rancho Solano.

The womens varsity basketball team rolled to their second straight win versus NFL YET, 51-8. Kayla Parsons had 16 points and 8 steals in her home debut for the Chargers. Rachel Garver had 7 points and 3 assists off the bench.

The mens varsity basketball team made a second half push but couldn't quite complete the comeback versus NFL YET, falling 51-48. Junior Brandon Fish had another big game, with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Owen Kremer chipped in with 10 points.

CarLife Charger of the Week (12/8-12/14):
Brandon Fish- Varsity Basketball

Brandon poured in a career high 33 points in the Chargers win at Tempe Prep, and followed that up with a 27 points performance in a 51-48 loss to NFL YET. He always demonstrates poise and composure, and has an outstanding habit of helping teammates and opponents off the floor.
