SUSD Update:
  • SUSD is conducting a follow-up Climate Survey to the one conducted a year ago at this time.
  • The purpose of the online survey for parents, students (grades 4 - 12), SUSD staff and community members is to find out how SUSD stakeholders believe the District is faring in its mission.
  •  Results of this year's survey will be compared to those of last year.

Kiva Is the Next Bond Project
  • At its Oct. 1 Special Meeting, the SUSD Governing voted unanimously to name Kiva Elementary School as the next school to be rebuilt/remodeled with 2016 bond funds.
  • Located at 6911 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley, opened in 1957 as a K-8 school.  It received its most recent update in 2002.

Join Our Kindergarten "5 Hive"!

SUSD's elementary grades schools will open their doors the week of Nov. 11 - 15 to next school year's kindergarten class ... and parents, too, of course!  Join our "hive" of 19 elementary and K-8 schools in the 2020-2021 school year.

If you have a busy bee who is already 5 years old - or one who will be by Sept. 1, 2020 - this opportunity to visit our outstanding early education programs happens just three times a year.

School Climate Teen Town Hall Debuts Nov. 2 at Arcadia

SUSD high school students are invited to take part in a teen-centered Town Hall event from 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2 at Arcadia High School.  "A Conversation on School Climate" will be moderated by a student, Chandler High School senior Teah Scott, president of the East Valley NAACP Youth Council.

Students will be invited to ask questions, make statements and relate their perspectives on diversity, equality and school safety to a panel of community leaders and school district officials. They will also be able to submit their questions and observations in writing to the moderator, who will share them with the audience and panel.

The panel for the Arcadia High School Town Hall includes: 
  • Erica Maxwell, Associate Superintendent of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Arizona Department of Education
  • Aaron Minor, Commander, Special Operations Division, Scottsdale Police Department
  • Amy Palatucci, Principal, Coronado High School
  • Shannon Paloma, Social Studies Teacher, Arcadia High School
  • Dr. Milissa Sackos, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, SUSD
  • Todd Stevens, Principal, Arcadia High School
  • Amanda Turner, Social Worker, Arcadia and Coronado High schools, SUSD 
Spanish translation services will be provided.

The event will be preceded at 1 p.m. by a student and parent Resource Fair featuring local human services organizations.

Two other Teen Town Hall events are planned:
  • Saguaro High School, 6250 N. 82nd St., Scottsdale, Feb. 22, 2020
  • Desert Mountain High School, 12575 E. Via Linda, Scottsdale, April 25, 2020
 mayorMayor's Annual Constitution Day Contest

SUSD students were proud participants again this year in Scottsdale Mayor W.J. "Jim" Lane's annual contest marking the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787.  The annual competition invites Scottsdale students in grades 1 - 12 to submit an original essay, piece of art or video.  This year's prompt was "What the First 10 Amendments/Bill of Rights means to me."

More than 450 entries were received this year, and the works of SUSD students were among the Top 5 finalists in almost every category.  Chaparral High School junior Ashley Yancy (pictured right) was named the Grand Prize winner in the grades 9 - 12 Art category.  All of the Top 5 finalists in that category are students of visual arts teacher Marcy Warner!

Ballots for the by-mail-only SUSD M&O Override election must arrive at the Maricopa County Elections Department by Nov. 5.  The Maricopa County School Superintendent's Office recommends that they be mailed no later than Oct. 29 in order to arrive by Nov. 5.  For more information on  the M&O override election, including a fact sheet and Frequently Asked Questions flyer, visit susd.org/finance
