"China Between 1936 and 1956" Online Course Added
We are pleased to announce that although Dr. Woods is unable to provide an in-person repeat of his course, “China Between 1936 and 1956,” he has agreed to produce a pre-recorded version of his course content that will be available to access online.

For a $20 fee, this new offering provides online access to video recordings of the course content. By registering, you will receive a link to a password-protected web page to access a series of videos that will be available for viewing on your computer, phone or tablet, at your leisure, for 4 weeks. You will receive the password on October 23. The videos will be recordings of Dr. Woods’ presentation slides with his narration of the course content. They are not live recordings of the in-person course, but they cover the same material that will be presented in the classroom.

Visit the Osher Registration Website to register online and pay the $20 fee. You can also register by phone by calling Customer Services at (208) 426-1709.

Student Office Assistant Changes
Goodbye, Alyssa!
We said farewell to our student office assistant, Alyssa Schnell, on June 5. Alyssa recently graduated from Boise State with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with minors in nonprofit management and Spanish for business.

Alyssa started working at the Osher Institute in September 2017 and consistently impressed us with her strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to take on whatever job she was assigned. We wish her well in her post-graduate endeavors!
Hello, Mitchell!
We said hello to our new student office assistant, Mitchell Crocker, on August 30—just in time to start off our busy fall semester! Mitchell is a sophomore at Boise State who hails from Eagle, Idaho, and is majoring in computer science.

Mitchell is the secretary and founding member of the tennis club on campus; he is also involved in the Honors College. He's always looking for new ways to stay active and have fun. Welcome to the Osher team, Mitchell!
Thank You, August Volunteers
Special thanks to our volunteers for helping us kick off this semester! Thank you to Allie Gooding, Sally Sherman, Kathy Horton, and Sheila Robbins for serving as greeters.

Thank you, too, to Stephanie Miller, Charlene Ripke, Arlene Hayward, Sally Merz, and Carol Delaney for tending to our courtyard garden.

Walking the Greenbelt SIG
Members of the Walking the Greenbelt SIG found a fun surprise on their walk last month! The Planters Nutmobile was parked next to the greenbelt and they stopped to snap a photo. Facilitator River Wilson said that, while the group is always looking for wildlife, this was unique. Thank you, River, for sharing this photo!

If you are interested in joining the Walking the Greenbelt SIG, visit the Osher Registration Website to register online or call Customer Services at (208) 426-1709.
In the Spotlight
Every month, Osher News highlights offerings that still have space available for members to enroll. The following offerings take place during the month of September:
Leonard Bernstein

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first American-born conductors to receive worldwide fame. He composed the score for the Broadway musical West Side Story , conducted the New York Philharmonic, and was known for being an inspirational educator who made classical music accessible to everyone. Learn more about this iconic figure, his influences, and the lasting impact he has made.

Presenter: Jennifer Drake, Music Director, Serenata Orchestra
Dates and times: Tue. & Thu., Sept. 11, 13, 18, and 20, 10 a.m.-noon

Communication, Gender, and Difference

Taking aim at reductive conceptualizations of gender such as, “men are from Mars, women are from Venus,” this course will examine how communication constitutes gender and our understanding of difference. Using the concept of intersectionality and recognizing gender as a discursive construction, we will employ different socio-historical artifacts to look at the ways identities are made possible, contained, privileged, and/or marginalized within the dominant culture. Short readings will be provided in advance of each session.

Presenter: Dr. Manda Hicks, Associate Professor of Communication, Boise State University
Dates and times: Tue., Sept. 11, 18, 25, and Oct. 2, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Cost: $45
