MERCY MEMO PARENT E-NEWSLETTER - October 28, 2019
Message from Mrs. Sattler
Dear Mercy Families,

We are well into a vibrant, energetic school year which is greatly due to the wonderful support of our parents and donors! We offer a huge thank you to our Mothers Club who, in addition to coordinating refreshments for Parent/Teacher Conferences, also provided a beautiful fall themed dinner spread for teachers. Thank you to all who facilitated or donated. This generosity and effort is truly appreciated and warmed the hearts of our faculty.

Speaking of warmth, the Dads Club hosted an impressive bonfire for Spirit Week, complete with music, a food truck, s'mores and an evening filled with Mercy pride. This year the Dads Club partnered with the Mothers Club for a fun filled family evening celebration focused on being a Marlin. We are grateful to our families and thank you for all you do for Mercy!

Many exciting projects are currently underway and I encourage you to follow Mercy's social media postings for updates. Construction has begun for both the Marlin Shop and the Catherine McAuley Tea Room with expected completion by the end of this semester. Final touches are in place for our new athletic parking lot. An amazing basement conversion is happening as lockers are gone, walls have been painted maroon and gold, and the space is being transformed into the Mercy Athletic Training Facility. Two classrooms (Mrs. Perry and Ms. Robinets) are piloting flexible seating furniture to better facilitate collaboration and active learning. The response from students is overwhelmingly positive and they are offering valuable feedback. If you would like to see the many enhancements first hand, don't hesitate to reach out to me to schedule a tour!

A Mercy High School student's education prepares her for college and career readiness through collaboration, complex reasoning and applied learning. It is for this reason that we are once again recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2019 - 2022. This status reflects our success as leaders in educational technology that engages students and promotes academic accomplishment.

Did you know that once per each six day cycle, Dean of Students Mrs. Eleasha Tarplin holds a Talk with Tarps student round-table? Students are encouraged to stop by and informally share ideas or areas of concern - and snacks are always available!

I thank you for allowing me to share with you the many reasons we have to be proud of our school. Thank you for allowing us to support your daughter as she becomes a woman who makes a difference!

May God's Grace and Blessings be in your path,

Join us for Mass at Mercy
You are invited to Mercy High School for our special Mass with The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop on Tuesday, November 5 at 10:15am in the Auditorium.

We are most pleased to welcome Archbishop Vigneron and look forward to him leading us in liturgy, blessing our student leaders, touring the school and speaking to staff and students.
Apple Distinguished School
Mercy High School is pleased to announce that we have been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2019 - 2022 for our integration of technology across the curriculum and school life.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

"In order to achieve this designation, Mercy needed to demonstrate a continual effort to plan, implement and evaluate transformational instruction using Apple technology. It is gratifying to have our innovative endeavors recognized in this way." - Larry Baker, Associate Principal & Apple Distinguished Educator

The selection of Mercy High School as an Apple Distinguished School highlights our success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. Mercy has been an Apple Distinguished School since 2013.

"Recognition as Apple Distinguished attests to our academic excellence. A Mercy High School student's education prepares her for college and career readiness through collaboration, complex reasoning and applied learning." - Patricia Sattler, Principal

\We are proud that at Mercy, students have the opportunity to be technology teachers and program innovators. The multi-touch book submitted with our application will soon be available for all to enjoy through iTunes. Stay tuned for more Apple Distinguished School developments!

Senior Lili Omilian finished 11th individually and sophomore Caitlyn Begosa finished 15th individually in a field of over 100 competitors.

A special congratulations to senior Lili Omilian, who was named to the All-Tournament Third Team, and to junior Alex Beverly, who earned her Varsity Letter! View the tournament statistics here.

Mercy Quiz Bowl's freshmen and sophomores competed in Detroit Catholic Central's annual Novice Tournament on Saturday, October 19.

"You're Only Young Once"
The Mercy Performing Arts Department Presents "You're Only Young Once"

Show times are November 8-9 at 7:30pm and November 10 at 2:00pm. Tickets are $10.  Purchase online here or at the box office prior to each performance.

Synopsis: Step back into high school in the 1980's! Comedy written by Glenn Hughes and directed by Isabelle Moore. This light and charming comedy is about the sheer insanity of high school life and its societies. The plot is a simple one of life's little complications, romantic entanglements and academic pressures. The real delights in this enormously popular play are the almost allegorical types the characters portrayed. There's the principal, the coach, the English teacher, the athletic star, the honors student, the ladies' man, the President of the PTA and many others. The setting is the principal's office on the morning of the big game, and all kinds of confusion ensue!

Mercy was blessed to welcome Immaculée Ilibagiza, author and survivor of the Rwandan genocide, who shared her amazing story and witness to how faith and forgiveness can change hearts. Thank you for giving us the gift of your spirit and teaching us about the power of prayer and the love of God!
Classroom Highlights

Science minds at work! AP Biology students conducted a lab to determine the rate of a chemical reaction that happens in our bodies all the time. In this experiment, students were to determine the amount of hydrogen peroxide consumed by titration of potassium permanganate. The volume titrated was then used to calculate the rate of reaction.

Circle of Mercy

Mercy was proud to honor long-time benefactors Isabel & Larry Smith at the 10th Annual Circle of Mercy dinner. The Smiths established the Dr. Claire Smith Hornung Memorial Scholarship to support the arts in memory of their daughter. The evening allowed Mercy donors to spend time with scholarship recipients and hear firsthand about how their generosity makes a difference. Everyone also enjoyed a beautiful performance by the Mercyaires.

THANK YOU to all of our Mercy supporters who help make a Mercy education possible for our young women who make a difference!

FAQ's about Cafe
1. How do I find out my balance? At this time, we do not use any online system for food purchases.  After each transaction at the register, your student will see her declining balance. We try to remind students when they are below $10. It is their responsibility to re-load when appropriate.

2. Can I find out what my daughter is purchasing? At this time, our system does not track what your student purchases, only the dollar amount. The cards work similar to a gift card at a department store.

3. What if my ID is lost or damaged?  When your ID is lost or damaged, you will need to go to the reception area and request a new one. The new one will have a new number on it. As soon as you get your new card, come to the register and we will transfer the balance from the old card to the new one.

4. Can a parent request their daughter's balance? Yes, the easiest way is to email amhallberg@mhsmi.org. You will need to include your daughter's name and her student ID number and you will receive an email with balance info.

Pro-Life Club
The Pro-Life club will host Michael Kenney, co-executive producer of the movie Unplanned, at its meeting on Wednesday, November 6. Kenney, a Mercy parent, will speak about our nation's founding principles regarding life as well as the making of the film. The following day the club will show Unplanned in the media center beginning at 2:45pm. The movie covers the true story of Abby Johnson, one of Planned Parenthood's youngest clinic directors and advocates until the day she saw something that changed everything. The film is about abortion "but even more so, it's a movie about the truth of forgiveness, repentance and redemption" (Johnson). While the film does not contain swearing or nudity, the film was given an R rating for the CGI recreation of what Johnson saw on the ultrasound screen as well as a scene involving the abortion pill. Parents and guests are welcome to attend.
