Dear Region 3 Members,
Here we are, off to the start of another school year! New teachers are filled with youthful optimism and enthusiasm. Seasoned veterans are full of cautious optimism and healthy skepticism, and I find myself entering the final year of my teaching career. It doesn't seem possible! You save and plan, but don't think it will ever really get here. I think back to my first teaching job and it just doesn't seem like it is that long ago. Then I look in the mirror, and yes, indeed, it was that long ago. I try not to think about it and just go on like it is any other year, but it isn't. The new year brings so many new opportunities. So I remain hopeful.
I hope all my seniors graduate and figure out what the next steps are for them. I hope all my classes go as planned. I hope I have fun because if I'm having fun the kids will too. I hope all my students are energized and engaged. I hope all my parents are satisfied. I hope I get all the support I need from my administrators and school board. And finally, I hope I don't have to use my NEA liability insurance.
After all, hope is the reason I became a special education teacher in the first place. If I didn't believe I could change the future, I would not have been able to do this job for so long. I truly believe with all my heart and soul that public education is the great equalizer in American society. We give hope to those who are poor, struggling, or have fallen through society's cracks. We give hope to all kids regardless of their ability or potential. And yes, the union is the only organization that is fighting to support our great public schools.
I hope you have a wonderful and fulfilling school year. Stay together and stay strong!

Tera Rogers from the Port Washington-Saukville Education Association was awarded funding from the Dennis Muehl Grant to attend this year's WEAC Summer Leadership Academy. Attending with Tera was PWSEA members Nathan Ugoretz and Brian Borley.
Tera had this to say about her experience:
"The Summer Leadership Academy was a learning experience for me. I had the opportunity to network with amazing union leaders from across the state. I learned about recruiting new members, how I can help serve our current members, and effective communication with District leadership. I am excited to kick off our school year with our new teacher luncheon that we were able to plan while at the Academy. I also plan to use a portion of my grant toward this luncheon. Thank you for your support!"

Region 3 Member Finalist for Presidential Teaching Award
Two WEAC members are among state finalists for the 2018 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), considered the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government for mathematics and science teachers. Congratulations to Region 3 member Alicia Korth of the New London School District and Rebecca Saeman of Middleton-Cross Plains.

Congratulations to the 2018 Appleton Area School District Mielke Educator of the Year Winner, Corey Otis!
Corey is a Region 3 member and English Language Arts Instructor at Appleton East High School. The Educator of the Year awards have as their purpose the recognition of outstanding contributions to the education program of the Appleton Area School District by a teacher or professional educator from each of the levels, elementary (K-6) and secondary level (7 - 12). An ancillary purpose, though equally important, is to increase community awareness of the achievements and accomplishments of the public schools, thus heightening respect for the teaching profession as a whole.

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

Recertification Elections
Even if your Local is NOT recertifying soon, talking about Recertification is a good idea. You can explain why your Local is not participating, that even without recertifying your UNION STILL EXISTS, and you can discuss the potential for holding a CERTIFICATION election in the future.

If your Local IS recertifying this year (Locals' decisions about recert are due to WR3 office by September 4, and voting takes place October 31-November 20), holding a 10-minute meeting is a great opportunity for you to have the discussion about what it all means.

ETF Face-to-Face Events - 2018 Schedule Updates
ETF has updated the face-to-face learning opportunities schedule to include dates through the fall of 2018. These include benefit fairs, benefit presentations and group retirement appointments scheduled in your area of the state.
