December 8, 2019 ~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time
Calling for Volunteers for Winterfest!

Good Afternoon,
On behalf of the ECPO I am writing to you with a plea. At this moment we are extremely short staffed for our adult volunteers for Winterfest (formerly Breakfast With Santa) at Merrill for the Raynham Community next Saturday, 12/14 from 9-12. This has never happened. This is our biggest event of the year in which we usually get about 400-500 guests. There is no way to hold this long standing tradition without volunteers. I now it is a very busy time for us all, but we are in great need of assistance. If we have not filled our volunteer slots by Monday 12/9 we will be forced to cancel. This would be heartbreaking for so many.
You are more than welcome to bring your children with you. Shifts have been divided so you can enjoy the event with your children and walk around as well. If you are able to give any time next Saturday please contact us.
Thank you to those who have already stepped up to help. We are very grateful.

Happy Holidays,
Nicole

Historical Tidbit:

New England's Dark Day

"May 19, 1780 was a remarkable dark day, which extended over the eastern states. It commenced in the area early in the morning and continued till the morning of the 20th. The atmosphere here appeared to be filled with a dense smoke, but there was no known cause which could produce such an effect. The grass and leaves appeared to be drenched in a gloomy green. The darkest time of the day was between eleven and two o'clock. Many families found it necessary to light a candle when they ate their dinner (noon-time meal). In the night it is said there was not a ray of light even of the feeblest class to distinguish an object though ever so near.' The real cause of this darkness has nestled in conjecture to the present day." A recollection from Hilda (Morton) Thomas (1899-1991) Back in 1780, there was no way to find an explanation as to what was happening because there were no meteorologists. The revolutionary soldiers spent the day in the taverns or churches not sure what was to come. Today, scientists believe that wildfires in Canada caused the darkness due to high amounts of ash particles in the atmosphere. And the next day it had passed, changing like weather in New England always does!

The Wilds

I am a big fan of Brené   Brown. A sociologist and writer, her insights into vulnerability and acceptance took her from Ted Talks to her own Netflix special.

As we head into "the season," it is her thoughts on developing a "strong back, soft front and wild heart" from  Braving the Wilderness  that resonates.

Sometimes, being in relationship is painful, any kind of relationship. If we are invested, we risk getting hurt. We need a strong back to set healthy boundaries and limits for ourselves. Be kind to yourself.

Then we can have a soft heart... arms wide open for hugs.

Wild heart: "...living out the paradox of love in our lives. Its the ability to be tough and tender, excited and scared, brave and afraid- all in the same moment." (p. 155)
Its a tension we struggle with. Being aware of pain and experiencing joy. Dr. Brown's point is that if we don't have joy and love, we can't give it away. Cultivate joy and love for yourself, make sure your own needs are being met... then you will have it to give away. Enjoy your week!
