Artful Greetings II
December 7 - 17, 2019

The art of holiday greeting cards by renowned historical Canadian artists

After continued interest and discussion, we will host the second edition of Artful Greetings in our absorbing Collectors' Den from December 7 until 17.  This exhibition formed through inspiration from the endearing Painters of Canada Series that was exhibited in 1931 by The Public Archives of Canada in collaboration with William E. Coutts, the founder of Hallmark Cards Canada, and Sampson-Matthews of Toronto.

Twenty-six Canadian artists contributed to the series, among them several members of the Group of Seven who had already gained national recognition.

The gallery has acquired two significant pieces of Toronto history created by York Wilson, R.C.A. (1907-1984).  The watercolours The Ward and Richmond and York were created by Wilson within days of each other in 1924 at the striking age of 17.  These pieces were exhibited widely, originally shown at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and in a variety of settings afterward, including The National Gallery of Canada.  These pieces underscore Wilson's unbridled talent as well as the beauty of the city of Toronto after nearly one hundred years.
