Pastoral Search Committee
Seeks Candidates and Members

The Pastoral Search Committee for the Federated Church of Ashland has scheduled two interviews with pastoral candidates in the next two weeks. The committee also continues to review additional applications and profiles of Baptist, Methodist and UCC pastoral candidates.

The next two interviews are with Baptist Ministers, but the Search Committee is meeting with a representative of the UCC denomination in the near future. The purpose of that meeting is to identify UCC pastoral candidates who should be inter-viewed. Although the Search Committee remains eager to meet with Methodist candidates, the Methodist branch is reluctant to accommodate the Federated Church of Ashland's chosen discernment process.

The process the Search Committee adopted involves review-ing resumes, inviting candidates for an initial interview, scheduling the most qualified candidates for pulpit supply and then soliciting feedback from the congregation on the candidates. Resumes are collected through denominational representatives as well as open postings at local seminaries.

The Search Committee recently expanded from the four original members to add a fifth full-time member as well as one ad hoc member. Ideally, the Search Committee would consist of eight members, so there are vacancies on the committee. If anyone is interested in joining he or she should apply to the Board of Deacons. According to the Articles of Agreement the Board of Deacons exercises appointment authority for the Pastoral Search Committee.

Admittedly the search process is taking a long time, but at this fragile moment in the church's existence, a careful and thorough approach is necessary to ensure our next leader is not our last leader.

       From the Diaconate

Greetings! We can't believe that September is upon us. It has been an extraordinarily warm and humid summer but once again we hearty New Englanders have persevered. Can we just say, "Thank heavens for air conditioners".  We have spent several Sunday mornings in our wonderfully cool Parlor and from all accounts those mornings were enjoyed by those who attended. Thank you, Doug, for helping to set up an altar and the chairs. And also thanks to those who helped by bringing in the hymnals and helped to put everything back in there places after the service.

We have been so fortunate to have Rev. Katie Keene with us throughout the summer and look forward to having her with us until a permanent pastor is on board. Rev. Keene has been a blessing in the lives of our parishioners who have had need of comfort in the past few months. Even though she has no regular office hours and is technically only here for us on Sunday mornings she has reached out several times to pray with and comfort members in need. For that the Deacons are very grateful and we extend our sincere thanks for her caring manner.

Now we are looking forward to fall and the start of a new church year. We are very excited to announce that Yucchi will be starting Sunday School classes on September 16th. We will also be celebrating Homecoming Sunday with a brunch following that service. We hope that you will all come and share in a time of fellowship that day.

The following week there will be a christening when we baptize Adalyn Nguyen, daughter of Dan and Julie and baby sister to Jack. There will be a reception in the parlor following the service.

We have been told by the Search Committee that there are several candidates to be interviewed and they will be filling the pulpit from time to time so that we can get to know them. Our office manager, Linda Iarussi, will let us know via email, the week before a candidate will be preaching. Please make an effort to be present when these candidates preach so that when the time comes to choose a permanent pastor we can do so as a fully informed congregation.

Other things to look forward to are Ashland Day, September 15th, where Ruth Hanning has announced that she will be manning a booth with church flyers and pens, etc., the arrival of the pumpkins the weekend of October 13th and of course our church Fair which will be held on the first Saturday in November. ("Can't wait for the Turkey Divan!").

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Bill Wallace for taking on the role of Historian for our church for the past year and a half. We're not sure how many of you are aware that we even have a Historian but there has always been someone working quietly behind the scenes to make sure that the long and distinguished existence of this congregation is preserved. For many years Dave Hansen kept records and collected old photos and documents pertinent to the building and to our members. When Dave and Nancy left, Bill stepped up to take on this daunting task. The fact that the church itself is a historical building coupled with its rich tradition of the Federation of the three main denominations in Ashland for the past 100 years, compels us to be diligent in our record keeping. Bill has spent countless hours ensuring that future generations will be able to look back on our records with pride. For this we say, "Blessings to you Bill, we are grateful for your untiring efforts on our behalf."

Lastly we would like to give a huge thank you to Linda for working through the past two summers to keep the church going. She is a mainstay of this church and we're not sure that we could have kept things going so smoothly without her. We know that we could not have done our jobs without her.

We continue to have great hope for the future of this church and its amazing parishioners. We are blessed by the ongoing enthusiasm for our outreach programs. We know that God has great plans for us.

Blessings,

Pam Dunham and Melanie Conner, Co-chairs of the Diaconate
At the August 22, 2018 meeting of the Council, the following significant decisions were taken:

1 - As a policy, expenditure of monies on major projects will be directed primarily to urgent projects. This will enable the Church to maximize retained funds to increase the time needed by a new Pastor, within which time he/she will be given to expand our congregation.

2 - $12,000 was approved to provide a new floor in Fellowship Hall. $10,000 of these costs will be paid using an anonymous donation from a member of the congregation.

3 - $21,000 was approved to repair the spire in the steeple, and to paint both full steeple and the columns in front. Approxi-mately $3,600 was received from insurance for the repair (but not the painting) of the steeple.

4 - Funding of repair for the Men's and Ladies' bath rooms was deferred until a firm bid could be received.

5 - Simple repair of potholes in the parking lot will be carried out immediately. Full replacement of the hot top is deferred to a later date.

6 - $1,000 was authorized to be spent by the Search Committee on behalf of Pastoral Candidates' expenses when visiting our Church.

7 - A plaque honoring Bob Richards will be placed in the front of the Church through the gift made by the Richards Family for the landscaping in the front of the Church. Landscaping was Bob's pride in the Church.

8 - $130 was approved to purchase pens to hand out from a Church booth at Ashland Day.

The PUMPKINS are scheduled to arrive ...
the weekend of October 13th.

Please mark your calendars NOW ... October 13th/14th.  We will send out an email to everyone when we get an exact date and time of delivery.

Again, this year, members and friends of the Federated Church will welcome a truck load of pumpkins which have been planted, grown and harvested by Native American Farmers from the Navajo reservation in New Mexico.

We will unload them from the truck and scatter them all over the front lawn of the Church. This creates photo opportunities for people passing by the Church, as well as an opportunity to purchase them. A portion of the proceeds support the Churches outreach programs.

If you have shared in this seasonal tradition, we welcome you back. If you are looking for a new tradition come and hunt for the perfect pumpkin at our Pumpkin Patch.  Bring the kids and take pictures and help support this community tradition and the good work that comes from it.

Thank you!

Hello families of FCOA!

As the school year gears up again, so does the Christian Education program here at the Federated Church of Ashland! Our first Sunday school class of the 2018-2019 year will be September 16th. Please don't forget to register your little one to assist us in keeping up to date records. Registration forms are a vailable in the Narthex or please call the Church office and Linda will send you one.

Each year is such a blessing to welcome back our little ones in Jesus' name. Each opening of Sunday school is an opportunity to practice the faith through selfless giving through volunteering. We are making sure we welcome the "least of these" and keep them safe in our care. Please consider reaching out and signing up for a few Sundays this year to see for yourself that the faith is being passed on. Having plenty of volunteers ensures that those who do volunteer also get plenty of opportunities to be fed God's word by attending our regular services.

Children are not the future church. They are the present church. They bring with them not only their smiles, unique gifts, and sometimes a little extra noise, but also their families. Their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends are drawn in by the life and love children freely bring into the church.

If you would like to volunteer please contact me at [email protected]
