Thursday, September 6, at 6 p.m. at the Mary D. Fisher Theatre. The event will be hosted by Alberto Ríos, poet, professor, and host of Arizona PBS's "Books & Co."

Please note a date, time, and venue change for the Verde Valley Book Club Mixer, a special event in the Library's Great American Read series.
It will be held on

Human Library Program Returns to Sedona
|
The second Sedona Human Library event, sponsored by Sedona International City of Peace, Rotary Club of Sedona, and the Library, will be held at the Library on Sunday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m.
The public is invited to "read" a live book by listening to a presentation and engaging in dialogue. Human books share their stories of being marginalized or stigmatized for their differences. In the process, judgments, stereotypes, and prejudices are explored. The goal is to gain understanding and develop new ways of relating.

Access our

- Conversational French Group: This month, the group meets on Tuesday, September 4 and 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Quiet Study.
- Conversational Spanish Group: Improve your Spanish-language skills at our meetings, held every Wednesday at the Library from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
- Book Club: Join us at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11, in the Quiet Study for a discussion of the novel "The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane," by Lisa See.
- Health Screening: A free health screening will be held on Wednesday, September 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room. Provided and funded by Northern Arizona Healthcare, the screening is designed to assess the risk of diabetes and heart disease by measuring cholesterol levels, blood pressure, and blood glucose.
- Technology Classes: Library staff will be offering a series of technology classes beginning in mid-September. Topics will include basic computer skills, Microsoft Word, file management, library databases, and cyber security. Classes are free and open to the public. Space is limited, and registration is required. A complete class schedule is available here.
- Coffee with a Veteran: The September Coffee with a Veteran speaker is Maureen McIlroy, who will recount her father's experience as a prisoner of war of the Japanese. As a POW, he labored on the notorious Death Railroad, which was immortalized in the movie "Bridge on the River Kwai." Everyone is invited to attend this free event on Friday, September 14, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room.
- Apple Computer Workshop: Learn tips and tricks for using Apple computers at an Oak Creek Apples workshop on Saturday, September 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the community room. All are welcome to attend this free program.

Movies in September and Anniversary Film Series
|
 This fall, we're celebrating the Library's 60th anniversary with a movie series highlighting four classic films made in Sedona. Special guests will host the anniversary films, which will be shown on the second Monday of the month, from September through December.
The series begins with "Broken Arrow" (1950) on September 10; other films include "Johnny Guitar" (1954) on October 8, "The Rounders" (1965) on November 12, and "Angel and the Badman" (1947) on December 10.
Please join us for these free screenings, in addition to new-release movies, on Monday nights at 6 p.m. in the community room. Note there will be
no film on Labor Day.

 September 10: Broken Arrow, a classic Western that tells the story of real-life Army scout Tom Jeffords.
- September 17: Book Club, about four friends who make bold romantic choices after reading "Fifty Shades of Grey."
- September 24: Won't You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary focusing on the unassuming host of the beloved children's program "Mister Roger's Neighborhood."

Youth Services at the Library and Beyond
|
Youth services librarian Karen Mack, pictured here with West Sedona Elementary School's new librarian, Vivian Kraus, attended Curriculum Day at the school. Karen chatted with families about the variety of books, services, and technology available at Sedona Public Library.
This month, we will resume regular visits to local Head Start and preschool centers. We've also coordinated visits to Red Rock High/Middle School to show students the invaluable research and database tools that are available 24/7 at
www.sedonalibrary.org.
Youth are invited to visit the Library to participate in Crafternoon, Chess Club, monthly movies, book club, Music Morning with Annette, story time three mornings a week, and special programs that always pop up.

Displays at the Library
|
- Members of the Verde Valley Weavers and Spinners Guild will demonstrate their skills and display their work at the Library from September 10 through 28. Don't miss this opportunity to see crafts created by talented local fiber artists.
- Members of the Verde Valley Photographic Society will display their photographs at the Library from September 15 through October 6. Founded in 2014, this Camp Verde-based group promotes the efforts of photographic artists in the region.
- The Oak Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will display a Constitution Week exhibit in the children's room from September 17 through 22.

Library Events in the Village

- Arizona Humanities Program: Alan Day grew up on the 200,000-acre Lazy B cattle ranch, a dusty tract of land that straddles the Arizona/New Mexico border. Day will discuss his experiences on the ranch in his presentation "Life on the Lazy B as Lived by an American Cowboy and Rancher," on Wednesday, September 12, at 1:30 p.m.
The program will be held at the Church of the Nazarene, 55 Rojo Drive, in the Village of Oak Creek. Sponsored by Arizona Humanities and Friends of the Sedona Library, the presentation is free and open to the public.
- Community Book Discussion: Participate in the next book discussion on Tuesday, September 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds Retirement Center, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. Find out what people read during our summer hiatus and pick up your loaner copy of the book selected for the following book discussion on Tuesday, October 30.
Community book discussions, sponsored by the Library and facilitated by library staff, are the last Tuesday of every month. They are free and open to the public.
