Rescue & Jessica:
A Life-Changing Friendship
by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes

Submitted by Terri S.

Jessica has lost the use of her legs and is wheel chair bound. A pup named Rescue learns that he’s to become a service dog, and not a seeing-eye dog like the rest of his line. When the two are paired, Rescue becomes the perfect service dog, partner, and best friend for Jessica. The story is based on the author’s own experiences when she, too, was paired with a service dog after being critically injured in the Boston Marathon bombing. Tender and relatable, the book provides depth to help young ones understand what it might feel like to be in a situation such as Jessica’s. At the end of the book, there are photos of the authors and the “real” Rescue, with links to follow for further learning.

From the Desk of Zoe Washington
by Janae Marks

Submitted by Stefanie M.
It’s Zoe Washington’s twelfth birthday, and she just had her dream party at her favorite bakery, with delicious chocolate fudge cupcakes and all. Everything is going perfectly until she finds the letter. The letter from her father who has been incarcerated her entire life, who she’s never heard from before until now. Or so she thought. All her life, she’s had the idea that her father was a horrible man, a convicted murderer, and someone who would never be a part of her life.
Follow Zoe and she begins a pen pal relationship with her father, starts a journey to investigate the truths she thought were absolute, and figures out that everything in the world might not be as black and white as she originally thought.
This is a great and accessible primer on mass incarceration, and the many wrongful convictions that predominantly people of color are faced with in the United States, intertwined with the day to day happenings of a twelve-year-old girl completing a summer internship at said favorite bakery and trying to navigate all the different relationships in her life. For fans of A Good Kind of Trouble, Front Desk, and All Rise for the Honorable Perry T. Cook.

Go With the Flow
by Lily Williams & Karen Schneeman

Submitted by Stefanie M.
This is a heartwarming and empowering tale of friendship and standing up for what’s right. Sasha is already stressed to be starting over at a new school, and is even more startled to be pulled into the bathroom by a group of girls only to be told that she bled through her (very white) pants and that she got her period for the first time. The girls look to the dispenser in the bathroom to help Sasha out, but to their astonishment--the dispenser is completely empty. This is the moment that changes their lives forever. Not only do they develop a sacred bond and become the best of friends, they also figure out ways to speak out to their school administrators to demand that those dispensers be filled and go on a quest to destigmatize menstruation.
