'Hats Off' to the Class of 2018!
Hats Off at Graduation 5.19.18
The latest convocation of PPAS Eagles has flown from our nest! PPAS faculty and staff, members of the Board of Directors, and families and friends of the graduates gathered in the Harte Student Center for commencement on Saturday, May 19. Hannia Sanchez of Miniatitlan, Veracruz, Mexico was named Valedictorian, and Ana Karen Santiago from Queretaro, Mexico, earned the rank of Salutatorian. As they soar towards the next chapter of their lives, we are confident that God goes with our new alumni. Congratulations to all!

Mad Hatter's Tea Fundraiser 'Very Important Date' for New Scholarship
Fun hats, characters from Alice in Wonderland (students from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts), and jovial hearts combined for the perfect tea time on Saturday, April 29. Presbyterian Women of Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church in Dallas hosted the Mad Hatter’s Tea, their annual major fundraiser, for which PPAS was the beneficiary this year. Seniors and Student Ambassadors Nadine Karabanga, Hannia Sanchez, and Ana Karen Santiago traveled with Director of Spiritual Life Rev. Rebekah Tucker-Motley to attend. The girls were interviewed on stage at the Tea, and shared about their experiences at Pan Am.

On Sunday, April 30 they presented a panel discussion to an adult Sunday school class, and participated in the 11 a.m. worship service. Thanks to the hard work of the PW planning committee and the generosity of the guests, $11,650 was raised to benefit PPAS' new Women of the Church Scholarship. Funded and administered by women, the scholarship will be awarded to a returning female student who meets established qualifications and will be inaugurated during the 2018-2019 school year. More details on the scholarship and how you, your church, or your church organization can support it will be coming soon.
Students Honored with Legacy Scholarships
As part of PPAS’ graduation festivities, seven legacy scholarships are given annually to graduating and continuing students. Each of the awards commemorates someone significant to the school’s history; and the recipients exemplify the namesake’s personality and passion. Congratulations to the following worthy recipients:

Berta Murray Award
Sofia Lara receiving the Berta Murray Award at graduation
Joshua Karangwa receiving the Perry Reed Award at graduation
Rangeland Improvement through Partnership with Natural Resources Conservation Service
Grassland Project
For the past two years, PPAS and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) have been working together to improve the school's rangeland. A plan was formulated to clear about 30 acres of the ranch and implement a mechanical control program to clear and manage the existing mesquite and huisache.

Following the completion of the brush work, a seed mixture of native grasses was planted to re-establish the area for cattle grazing. The seeds, which were adapted to South Texas from years of work done by the South Texas Natives under the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute and the NRCS Kika de la Garza Plant Materials Center, included Lasalle Arizona Cottontop, Nueces Sand Dropseed, Little Bluestem, Alamo Switchgrass, South Texas Sideoats Grama, just to name a few.

Now, the key is to manage the newly established natives to keep them in a vigorous state for cattle grazing, which is done by resting the 30 acres from time to time. Follow-up brush management will also continue, and with help from Mother Nature in the form of rainfall, the school should continue to have native grasses to be grazed for years to come.
