 Delaware Air Quality Awareness Week
The Air Quality Partnership of Delaware has announced Delaware Air Quality Awareness Week, from April 30 through May 4, 2018. Several events are planned as part of the week, including "Try It Day Delaware." Try It Day is your chance to try a greener mode of transportation (walk, bike, carpool, or public transit) during the week. Individuals who post selfies to social media sites, using the hashtag #TryItDayDE, will be entered to win a $25 gift card.
The partnership is also awarding Air-Friendly Business awards to local businesses that make efforts to encourage employees to make greener transportation choices. If you know of a local business that may qualify, please email

Applications Sought for Transportation Alternatives Program in Cecil County
Maryland State Highway Administration and WILMAPCO are accepting applications for the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) from April 16 to May 16, 2018. Cecil County government agencies, municipalities, and non-profits may seek TAP funding assistance for transportation improvements that create bicycle and pedestrian facilities, restore historic transportation buildings, convert abandoned railway corridors to pedestrian trails, mitigate highway runoff, and other transportation related enhancements. Federal TAP funding is dedicated exclusively for use in Cecil County but sponsors much provide a minimum 20% funding match. Learn more at

Delaware Scenic Byways Public Meeting

Delaware is Working to be on the Cutting Edge of Self-Driving Cars
According to the News Journal, "While autonomous vehicles may be a decade or so away, in Delaware, officials want to be ready when the technology arrives. A University of Delaware Institute for Public Administration (IPA) report published last year looked at the levels of automation, safety, congestion, and impacts the technology might have on the transportation system, jobs, and the economy. Six months after the report was released, Gov. John Carney established an advisory council on connected and autonomous vehicles through an executive order. Carney and other state officials believe that the economic impact of autonomous technology could mean a better quality of life for Delawareans and spur economic development.

Preparing Communities for Autonomous Vehicles
The American Planning Association has released a report that summarizes the findings of a symposium regarding the implications of autonomous vehicles for cities and regions. This report is intended to let planners and local government officials identify steps they can take now to prepare their communities for autonomous vehicles." Renault Unveils Driverless Uber-style Car
According to Dezeen, "Renault has devised a concept for an autonomous, electric vehicle that would provide city dwellers with an alternative to public transport. Renault's Ez-Go concept functions as both a car and an Uber-style ride-sharing service. Able to accommodate up to six passengers, the vehicle is designed to be used for riding alone, with friends or family, or shared with other ride-hailing users - who would request the vehicle via a smartphone app." To view the source article, please visit

An Examination of Effects on Drivers Yielding to Pedestrians, Speed at Crosswalks, and Sign Durability 
According to the ITE Journal, "Pedestrian fatalities and injuries represent a growing percentage of all traffic fatalities and injuries. In an attempt to develop a low-cost treatment that could be effective Bennett, Manal, and Van Houten reported on the use of in-street signs. The sign produced a marked improvement in yielding at multilane crosswalks that was comparable to those produced by a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB)."
